Hi there! New to site so please be forgiving. My '98 20V coupe is fitted with a META M99TFA Alarm system which has started to play up. Siren sounds worn out and goes off at all hours even when alarm unset. Central locking works with fob and on key, but alarm is making strange sounds when setting, as if its damp. Is there any way I can disconnect the siren from the system without it affecting the central locking? There does not appear to be a switch in the glove box as stated in the Fiat manual to switch alarm off. I have been locking the car on the key to avoid siren going off at all times of day and night but without success. I think all my neighbours would be very grateful for a speedy response!.....Thanks in anticipation!

Hi
Chexk the Meta website for the instructions for your alarm. Can you see the siren in the engine compartment. What numbers/letters can you see on the siren ?

Hi, thanks for that. I'll take a look once the snow thaws - it might be some time - ha! Its been quiet all night, so the neighbours are probably cheering!

Yes you can disconnect without upsetting the central locking. I had to do this. The alarm, if fitted on import, is located in the footwell above the trottle pedal and behind the carpet.

Mine was so badly fitted it would drop out onto/under the pedals. I relocated mine to behind the removable panel on the end of the dash (driver's side).

Locate the alarm unit and remove the plug/cable that travels from the unit, across/under the dash to the nearside, where it then goes out of the car to under the N/S wing where the alarm siren head is located.

All should then be fine, apart from having no siren.

Note! You insurance may be affected by this. The Coupe is/was Thatcham Cat 1 on import (mobiliser only) but borught up to Cat 2 by the addition of the alarm unit. Your insurance my be rated/valid for Cat 2 only.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for the info. Think the alarm has given up as it has'nt sounded since the big freeze, so hopefully there will be no need for me to remove it. I'll keep your info just in case. Once again - a BIG thanks!! ;)

A futher point. I never pursued opening the siren unit up, but I believe it contains a backup battery and when this battery gets knackered this is the cause of all the false alarms etc. It could be that in this cold weather the alarm battery is just too low on volts to partially power anything. When the weather warms up your troubles my reappear :)

hi there, if all else fails, try spraying some expanding foam from b&q into it, this will shut it up, but you'll never be able to use it again.
hope this helps.

Way easier to disconnect the cable as the siren unit is normally installed behind the inner wing, above the wheel arch liner, on the N/S of the car. Takes a little getting too.

Thanks again Nick. Been away for a few days and just read your post. All quiet at the mo! Regards, Ruth.

Well, for whats it worth. According to the Fiat Coupe Forum, the standard meta alarm more often than not plays up.

This is why most change the alarm at some stage. My coop came with a different alarm already fitted.

Give them a visit & hit the search button. Loads of information about your problem.
