The water pump isn't driven by the cambelt on a 1.6 engine, it's very different from other Stilo engines.

Most garages do a parts and labour guarantee- so faulty parts or bad fitting means back to the garage for them to sort out at their cost

his had a quick look n a tug, n said the belts tight.. so the initial aa analysis could be wrong. his having a closer look soon

thanks, i love my stilo when it works. the little chav's faces when you beat them off the line in their crappy saxo's and corsa's.
but lately, its just problem after problem n its wearing me down.

i think il try and explain my other problem, see what you think.

The performance has been poor lately, between 2000-3000 revs its been shockingly poor. It seems to choke and lose all power. however i take my foot off the accelerator n put it back on, it goes back to normal again.

it just seems to be in 2-3 though, otherwise its ok. It does seem to be worse when its cold aswell..

I dont know if its linked but this issue came about the same time as the rattle from the water pump... theres also a loss of coolant aswell before the noise from the water pump...

Looks like you have two issues then:

1. Loss of water - could be many things
2. A rattle immediately followed by erratic performance. There's a big clue here and I'd suggest something in the cam area became loose which in turn would throw the timing out. Finally the belt fails.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with your water pump although I could easily be wrong :chin:

On the 1.6 the cam belt does not power the water pump, it is powered by a aux belt, so i'd say take it back to the garage, there are allot of cheap rubbish belts out there, best to go for gates belts or a genuine part but i'd defiantly go back and see what the response is, your never no it may be positive. Hope this helps.

ok, well they've had a proper look.

the cam belt is fine, but a shaft in the engine which has a bearing on it..? the bearing has fallen apart which is the metallic noise (not the pump, the pumps perfectly fine) , this had to led to a pulley seizing up and the cambelt missing teeth.

However without replacing the saft, theres no way of telling if the valves are damaged. Any known anything like this to happen before? Does anyone know with an educated guess if the valves are likely to be damaged?

I have the option of either replacing the shaft and the pulley, then seeing if the valves are damaged,
or,
taking apart the engine and doing it that way which is more likely to cost more?

yeh but reliability is much higher with a ford. well il never make this mistake again, thats for sure.

As someone who has alot of experience with ford & Fiat warranty...your talking rubbish i'm afraid!

Fords also have cam belts and water pumps too. Only way to avoid this is to buy a car with a cam chain, not a belt. BMW and most Japanese manufacturers tend to use chains instead of belts.

A cambelt can't be fine and missing teeth

The cam belt certainly isn't fine if teeth are stripped

Can you be more specific? Do you mean the belt tensioner has seized or do you mean a camshaft has seized (never heard of that )

i cant get pictures im afraid because im not with the car.

im not too sure myself, he said the belt slipped and a pulley seized?

i think the shaft was called the intermediate shaft? and the bearing on that has broken apart.

Out of interest I am getting my cambelt and tensioners changed on Thursday 55k and 4 year old 1.4 Petrol Stilo. The garage is a Fiat specialist and hasn't mentioned changing the water pump. Should I be having that done too on a 1.4 Stilo?

1.6 16v owner and i think i had bad luck when choosing the car.

iv done 15k (its now on 64k) in 1 year and its cost me £1500 to fix stuff, however included in that is:

New valves, headgasket (belt slipped) new shaft in the engine
I had to change the piston, caliper, brake pad for the a rear wheel
New rear and front brakes

and obviously a cam belt change.

On the upside, virtually everthing will be new!!
