Yup. Whereas with HDD's you've at least got a chance of getting data with recovery software or by swapping the circuit board over on the HDD.
Personally if it were me backing up I'd use a hard drive and back up every week and leave the HDD at someone elses house so if your house burns down or is flooded your backup is safe.
When you're transferring gigabytes of photos wireless is too slow IMHO, unless I was to leave it on all night. Also, only do photo storage on one PC (desktop) so wired is fine.
