Quick question, is the exhaust gas ImageUploadedByFIAT Forum1377712744.734944.jpgsupposed to be that hot it melts my mud flaps? (standard fiat ones)

Yes.

The exhaust exiting the engine is at about 750-800 degrees. On a reasonable journey, the whole exhaust gets hot, so shouldn't touch even the back end. I have known exhaust to damage plastic bumpers, but this is usually when the exhaust pipe is incorrectly positioned.

From your pic, I would not expect the exhaust to harm the mudflap. You should check the exhaust and mountings to ensure that all is correctly positioned and not able to move too far. I'm thinking you may find some new rubber mounts may be needed.

Shortly after I found out my mud flaps were melting I started to get a knocking noise which I have put down to being the exhaust hitting rear beam :) thanks for the reply at least I know it's normal for the exhaust to get that hot

Slightly off-topic. Ford Sierras (sorry about the swearing) had a one-piece exhaust fitted on production line. Replacements came in three sections. So many people lined up the new piece, marked the original and cut it off, failing to allow for the overlap. This placed the tailpipe 2" inside the rear bumper and within a month they were asking the exhaust supplier for a new bumper, as if the exhaust was at fault. (All warranty claims refused!)

I bet you are all wondering how you've got through life so far not knowing this stuff!

PS. Just remembered, some Mk3 Escorts were like this too.

Yeah,i have a mk 2 punto and i fitted a set of standard mudflaps, and yes the exhaust gasses burn the mud flaps.its just the position of the exhaust, its too closeto the mud flaps, fiat engineers/designers,do they not take these things into consideration when designs exhausts etc???

Exhausts are still fitted as a one-piece item on most, if not all, production cars to this day- it's all about saving time, and therefore money. The standard mk2 1.2 8v needs cutting just before the rear axle for a replacement centre/rear section. :)

Were they OE (ie, Fiat) mudflaps, and were you still on the original exhaust?

I've seen many poorly fitting mudflaps and cheap, pattern rear silencers that don't get on well, lol.
