Technical ESP hill holder warning lights on

hi all
I’m new to a Fiat 500 range, I’ve had a Fiat do list van but never had a problem with it but had the 500 since April now the warning lamp for the esp hill holder has come on, it’s only been on for a couple of days and today I was taking it to a diagnostic place but the car wouldn’t even start this morning just turned over it did fire up for around 3 seconds but then died and did leave a fuel smell when I got out of the car. I have a friend with a plug in thingy that gives you codes but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same thing and what was done to sort it. Thanks in advance.

And what does esp mean? It doesn’t say in the handbook

its a stabllty aid (uses ABS the brake opposite wheels..)

Might try to wobble the switch about on the clutch pedal. Mine comes on when I leave my foot resting on the clutch
