I thought ASR was a standard fit item on a stilo? I didn't think you could buy one without it? I only ask as I have a 1.2 and it has ASR, and I can't see the previous owner paying extra for ASR when they didn't even bother to buy aircon.
Seems a bit odd I agree - but there are even 115BHP JTDs out there without ASR so count yourself lucky.:)

I makes perfect sense to me :) (even if I am more confused than ever )

It would seem that although both you and Santa drive Stilo Multijets, there's actually an intriguing difference between them. I simply cannot believe that FIAT Spain would go to the trouble of routing the ASR output to the ESP light just to save the cost of one LED!!!!!:bang:

I suspect the real reason is that your Multijet uses a completely different control module which is only able to output to one indicator light - hence FIAT routed it to the ESP light. What would be really interesting would be to test both cars on a circuit to check for handling differences.

I'm with you so far :)

Now that would be interesting (and fun :D ).

I'll do a test on monday, when i get my car back from the dealer.
And i'll check the manual (perhaps you could both see what the manual says about ASR/ESP??)

I checked my manual and it says that on non abarths the light for ASR and ESP is the same one (the one with the triangle) and that on my car the spinning wheel one doesn't work.
I know it's not the bulb that has gone out because the triangle light works both on standstill whellspin (ASR) and high speed cornering with ASR off (ESP) so for some stange reason Fiat spain have found it cheaper/easier to do it this way.
What i'm wondering now is if the sapinning wheel light (ASR) can be turned on from the examiner????? Sometimes when i come out of corners and accelerate i'm not sure if the light is flickering because of the ASR or ESP and though it really makes no difference to me i'd still like to know!!!(y)

Had a good read of the technical manual today so time to bore everyone.:p

Apparently ASR was available as an option up until June 2003. After that date it’s ESP or nothing which would pretty much explain why I’ve only got ASR.

It would seem ASR is an enhancement of ABS and ESP is a further enhancement of ASR. It would be wrong to think of them as separate discrete systems and this is why it’s impossible to have ESP without ASR (and for that matter without ABS)

ASR and MSR are a lot more sophisticated than I first thought. Although ASR only controls engine torque and breaking on the driving wheels it actually uses all the information available from all 4 wheels. For instance it uses relative rear wheel rotation to work out how fast you’re cornering and responds to lack of traction accordingly.

ESP goes one step further by utilizing information which can’t be obtained from purely wheel rotation. It uses an extra sensor to detect the actual forces acting on the car and in particular rotational forces about the cars axis. A 2nd sensor on the steering rack provides information about what the driver’s doing.

Since every ESP system must include ASR it follows that a switch to disable ASR must be included. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to use snow chains or drive in deep mud:eek: or snow.

From what I can gleam upgrading from ASR to ESP would be quite a challenge as not only would you need to install the extra sensors but the control unit would need to be changed too.

I’ve not been able to find any information about why some ESP systems use a single display light and others use two - so that still remains a mystery?

Come on Techies - somebody must know?

Just got my car back from the dealer (with a working 6th gear :D ) and checked the manual.

Regarding ESP, it states that during startup, the ESP light should light up for a few seconds and then turn off. If it lights up while driving, it means that the ESP is actively in use.

Regarding ASR (and here there is some inconsistency), the ASR light should light up for a few seconds during startup. Mine doesn't do that.....
If it lights up while driving, it means the ASR is at work and trying to control spinning.

This correspondsto what i have experinced my self. The ESP light is only for the ESP and the ASR light is for the ASR.

I have absolutely no idea(

), as to why the lights work different in Stilo Multijet 140bhp car......

Ok don't be mad, but i did a test last night.........................................

and it would seem i remebered wrong  soooorrrryyyyyyyyy.......

I was sure i had seen the spinning wheel, but last night it was the esp light that started to blink when i tried to make the wheels spin, so i'm guessing it never worked (the asr light).
It's still doesn't corresponds to what the manual states, but hey it's a fiat :D

So i admit i was wrong and Stilo Mutlijet 140bhp you're right.(y)

Perhaps i'm just getting old and loosing my memory;) ......ah well, we got a little discussion out of it.

@Stilo Mutlijet 140bhp: sorry for doubting you, but i was so sure i had seen that light. On another note; have you had your multijet measured yet (bhp/nm)? and have you considered chiptuning?

Well at least it all makes sense now. The whole point of the discussion was finding an easy way of knowing (say if you're buying a used motor) if your car has ESP or not.

We've shown there is a real easy way which only takes a few seconds.(y)

I know quite a few might argue it's way more fun hanging the back out on hairpins (or roundabouts) or going sideways down a dirt track and having a quick glance to see if the ESP light is on but you've got to remember that us guys without ESP have to really really push our motors to try to get the light to flash;) :D :D

I havn't got my car measured for bhp yet but i deffo wanna get it remapped, i'm just waiting to find a good reasonably priced place to do it. When i do get it done i might have it put on the machine to see how much power the car is giving.

As for other enhancements i've already had it lowered (Eibach pro kit 30mm) and i can certainly recomend it to anyone who is thinking about it. It hardly makes the car more unconfortable (nobody except you will notice the differnce) the handling improves alot on long fast corners (can't feel it is much on roundabouts and sharp corners) and you can connect several corners toegather without getting that annoying whiplash i used to get when changing the side townrds which the car was leaning (i had not noticed the whiplash until i actually changed the springs)
Also, they give you alot more confidence and allow you to push the car alot harder, i find myself loosing the front end of the car (on purpose) comming out of corners when i start accelerating again; the control over the car is so much better.
Finally there is one last but very important advantage to car lowering, since i've had it lowered i've pushed the car pretty hard and have not had the ESP light come on once!!!! (though i get quite a few ASR ones!!!!) Well worth it!!!!(y)
