Technical Error code P0089

Hi everyone, looking for some help. I was just driving along and the EML light came on. I put on my OBD reader a got code P0089. It’s was heavy driving rain when this happened. Can anybody advise. Currently on recovery truck back to Scotland.

Low fuel pressure, can be for many reasons.
So more testing/diagnosis required.

Hi again @theoneandonly , yes same van. Everything was running good, drove over 1100 miles this trip. Driving along on motorway, nothing unusual, then eml came on and no power. Done a quck scan with Autel 519 scanner, dtc P0089, I'll run MES in the morning. The engine won't turn over, no unuasual noises.

Re the not turning over is that after breakdown due to a flat battery if Recovery Truck left hazard lights and ignition etc. on or before recovery?

After we stopped on motorway the engine would not turn over. The breakdown mechanic tried to start a few times while trying to fix/diagnose at service station. I’ve located the fuel cut off and pressed it to reset. It definitely clicked. While o had the panels off I noticed a plug disconnected, do you know what this plug is for? Not sure if mechanic has forgot to connect it. Now the only error I’m getting is U0001-87. Thanks.

Sorry don't know about that plug.
So it was still running when you stopped with EML light on, but wouldn't restart?
Did recovery driver try to do anything to start it?
U code is can bus stuff and like ABS stuff doesn't usually stop engine from working.
All your immobiliser side is working like normal?

To be honest I was braking hard and pulling into the hard shoulder so quick I couldn't say it was running 100%. As soon as EML light and "Check Engine" came on I stopped as soon as possible. I can clear the faults with MES but still can't get engine to turnover, battery is fully charged too. Not sure how to test immobiliser?

To be honest I was braking hard and pulling into the hard shoulder so quick I couldn't say it was running 100%. As soon as EML light and "Check Engine" came on I stopped as soon as possible. I can clear the faults with MES but still can't get engine to turnover, battery is fully charged too. Not sure how to test immobiliser?

If it died as you were driving then unlikely to be immobilser side as they are designed not to activate whilst driving for obvious dangers involved.
Just wondering if it is a mechanical issue rather than electrical.

I'm thinking along the lines of fuel pump fault, Just checked that the fuel relay is working, I can hear and feel it click , checked that camshaft rotating during cranking

Good cam is moving.
So engine is turning on the starter then?
Does it feel like good compressions, as in normal cranking sound?
Is rev counter moving as in faulty crank position sensor fault?
Can you measure common rail fuel pressure on cranking with your diagnostic tool in live data.

Well Fiat Professional have now had 3 hours for diagnosis and requesting an additional 3 hours for electrical testing. I’ve just read a post on an other forum where the problem turned out to be the fuel lift pump in the tank, this was found after replacing multiple components/ sensors and injectors. This is my latest message from Fiat, are they going the right route?

Well Fiat Professional have now had 3 hours for diagnosis and requesting an additional 3 hours for electrical testing. I’ve just read a post on an other forum where the problem turned out to be the fuel lift pump in the tank, this was found after replacing multiple components/ sensors and injectors. This is my latest message from Fiat, are they going the right route?

Wow! so you will be down over £700 with the Vat and no firm answer?
Are they saying there is fuel from the pump in the tank, but not after the high pressure pump or something else?
Does seem a little vague.

Yes, from what I read it’s got fuel at the fuel pump but not from pump to engine.

When I dropped the van off the camshaft was rotating when ignition turned on, now they are saying it doesn't rotate now! I got email few days ago saying couldn't find anything mechanically wrong and timing belt checked now they would need to wait for auto electrician to diagnose further. Surely if engine seized a technician would notice pretty early on, they've now done 6 hours diagnosis. Finally, is the high pressure fuel pump to injectors engine driven or belt driven? Also if engine was replaced by Fiat professionals 20K ago I would not expect anything major to go wrong for a long time.

To me it would say either a very incompetent diagnosis by the " Professional" or they broke something when working on it.
When I had my small Motor business, it would have only taken me a few minutes to realise an engine was seized and I would have told the customer the score there and then, with no charge.
If he had wanted an estimate for an exchange engine or whatever I would have got back to him promptly with my best advice on what course to take.

Hi everyone, I have a bit of an update, basically I'm stuck what to do next. The Fiat Professional garage are now saying the engine is seized and needs replaced at my expense. For a recon engine they want £20k to supply and fit, or £27k for a new engine. Problem being they say they already have a customer waiting over 5 months with no expected delivery date from Fiat. I've contacted Fiat UK, who replied " this is unfortunate but nothiing we can do"
I am positive the engine could turn over and they have seized it, this is a reply from the srvice manager after I questioned the diagnosis, I said I wanted for information that "it's seized" this was his reply:

I understand your concerns and the frustration you're feeling. However, I must clarify that in order to fully diagnose a non-start issue, our team is required to turn the engine over at several points. At some stage during this process, it appears the engine began to lock up. While it hasn't completely seized, the crankshaft only manages to rotate nearly 360 degrees before hitting a tight point, which strongly indicates internal mechanical failure.
As we've advised on multiple occasions, our diagnostics have consistently pointed to a failed engine. This has now been further confirmed during the removal of the sump, where we discovered several large pieces of metal inside - clear evidence of internal damage.
I appreciate your reference to the roadside observations and John's earlier comments. However, it's important to note that initial inspections can only assess so much without the benefit of a full strip-down. Our workshop diagnosis has gone much deeper and, unfortunately, confirmed the engine failure beyond doubt.
While I fully understand your disappointment, I must also point out that this is not the first time our diagnostics have been called into question. I want to assure you that my team is thorough, experienced, and committed to accuracy in our assessments. If you are unhappy with our finding, I am happy to have the vehicle rebuilt, the bill settled and taken elsewhere for a second opinion.
In terms of next steps, I'll follow up with our parts department and confirm the current lead time for a replacement engine and an estimated timeline for completion.

Difficult with out knowing the whole story, sounds like a very expensive job even if parts turn up, which does seem unlikely any time soon.
Are they saying you are going to be presented with a bill of around £700, just to tell you the engine is fu**ed?
