Just done an oil & filter change, new air filter and spark plugs. All seemed fine yesterday after a 13 mile run into town. About 3 miles after a coffee stop and heading home through town the fan came on which I’ve never heard before. Got home and jumped out and the car smelt very hot. The temp gauge was still showing 3 bar as it always does. The coolant was inbetween max and min but was a lot deeper colour than it has been before. Left to go cool down and next day started fine. Let it tick over and after 10 mins the fan cut in.
Not sure if related to the service of just coincidence.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Martin

Eh up,

Just check the coolant is circulating are top n bottom hoses the same temperature

Is oil level the same as when you changed it

Any sign of mayonnaise on the top of the dipstick

Nothing you have done should result in what you have observed

Just a note of caution on the TA oil, make sure you use the correct oil they are very temperamental in my experience- oil is important for lube and will/could effect temperature if not circulating correctly

Just try rule out the obvious first

Just a thought as you say it looked darker coolant, when engine cold check coolant tank for oil (no I am not saying you filled in the wrong hole;) ) I have had a couple of vehicles that the oil cooler on the oil filter has failed causing hot oil to go into the coolant.
Most recent was a Doblo diesel that seller thought was a head gasket issue but turned out to be the oil cooler, some years before I had a customers petrol Audi fail in the same way (that was easy to do )
Many years ago I was sent on a factory course in a Morris Marina 1.8 that I was unhappy with, but told to use, 70 mph in the outside lane near Birmingham the engine seized solid just as I passed a lorry, so dipped the clutch and free wheeled across it's path and onto the hard shoulder (thankfully well before "smart motorways!!!" In that case it was a head gasket failure that had pumped the engine oil directly into the radiator, so same result , but different cause.

Good point but definitely used the the oil filler. No oil in water

Used shell, oil which was the correct spec. Oil,level was a little low but I purposely didn’t over fill it so put a small amount in when I got back.
No mayonnaise and no oil in water. Just the water coolant looks darker red than before. Only other thought was the spark plugs as they were a different NGK number compared to the ones in there. Not sure if that would have any effect? Seems strange the water temperature gauge never went up and also no warnings on dash.

Eh up

I tend to use the more expensive iridium plugs in mine and runs sweet

I don’t want to start an oil debt thread here as there loads of opinions on what’s good/bad

Just my experience on shell was my engine did not like it and I dropped it and changed it. Definitely ran smoother.

I cannot think of anything that’s triggering your darker coolant unless it’s contaminated

Really odd, you could try a sniff test just to check or get a rad cap of and look for bubbles or do a litmus test

At least it rules stuff out, got to be something fairly simple it’s just finding the answers

Hope some of the above helps

The plugs are iridium so thought should be ok. If I can’t work it out I’ll get fiat oil and do a change again. Not worth risking it for a few quid.
I’ll try the hoses tomorrow once I warm it up. I thought maybe the thermostat shut but I’m sure the temp gauge would have shot up.

Eh up,

Agree with you usually stick open or stick somewhere in between, again another cheap swop out of needed

The hose test is as good as owt or use a temp gun, even the cheap ones you get work a treat . They are amazingly useful I use mine to check sticking brake pads, discs , hoses, gearbox temps.

Sounds like you know what stuffs about just work logically through things .

I’m intrigued as I’ve had TA since 2016 and this is one issue I’ve never experienced

Thoughts were if the coolant was getting really hot I guess the stat must be open. It might just coincidence that I did a service. The car has only done 13K miles from new so I’d like to think nothing major. The more I read the more people say the correct oil is really important. Going to stick it back up on the ramps tomorrow and make sure I haven’t knocked off any sensor plugs etc just in case the car thinks it’s running lean and over fueling it. Will also check the air filter is seated properly etc
