Diesel, with a very hot turbo charger. Average mileage, cooling system ok, no loss. Oil level ok, no smoke or smell from exhaust. Just “ burning “ smell from under bonnet, when opened, turbo is very hot. You can feel the radiant heat, but No unusual noises. This vehicle does seem to have a bit better acceleration/kick than the other one. Had it a year with no engine/ transmission issues.

Assuming bearings on the way out, oil starved, just old and unknown service/maintenance by previous owners?
Check oil supply, else change turbo before it goes bang/seizes?
Anyone else have experience of this?

Turbo's get hot under the bonnet.
It's a good practice to open the bonnet after a hard drive to let everything cool down more easy.
It's also a good habbit the let the engine idle for 1-2 minutes before shutting of, so engine oil will cool the Turbo.

This is just daily journey, not a hard drive. Might be good practice, but never left to idle in 40 years, these vehicles have start/stop which would negate that mode in any case.
