Just out of curiousity is the £400 for the pair of cams, or just the one? (Would i need to replace both?)

Took the rocker cover off (that was hard enough...lol), can't see anything obvious...

Drained the oil, and ran it through a collinder (don't tell the mother-in-law ), pretty clean...
I looked for any scratches on the cams...(none)
Turned the engine over manually...(all seems fine)

I did notice one of the spark plugs was a little bit rusty...

Is there anything else i can check easily?

Looks happy enough. Rusty ontop of the plug or did you take them out?

Its always possible the variator has bitten the dust, you know how often the barch ones die

Looks like its just on top...but i haven't taken them out yet, going to do that in a min. when i warm up a bit...lol

on the punto or barchetta, it usually makes the car sound like a tractor.
i think the barchetta club websit has a soundfile if you want to compare.

It must have one as its variable valve timing.

I think the Variators are around £70ish...
Funny cause a few months ago, I had a noise problem similar to yours Daz..Took it to various garages including 3 Fiat dealers, and had various answers...one was the variator, only turns out that the Brava 1.8 hasn't got one, but the 1.8 Barchetta has..
anyway the problem was diagnosed as inlet cam/tappets/piston slap/ and finally bigend! which it turns out it was...
bought some Millitec 1 (I know it was slated on here) but drove the car on for around 3000 miles, and was still going strong until I got hold of a second hand lump, which is being fitted this weekend

Right, i dont think its the variator, as it doesnt stop when revved over 2000rpm...i only tried this once as i don't want wreck anything else...

talk to Sy nicely and see if he will lend you the one off his non-running HGT to try u and tafi could go on a road trip to get it to try. lol
