Technical "Engine failure"

At least that's what the dash says.

Car drives fine. Rad kicks in and has oil etc.

I was doing 60 when it popped up and I carried on.

This is the first time in a while that I've done a constant fast speed and I do have a hole in the backbox. But it's obviously past all the sensors.

I take it the engine check light

Rad kicks in, you mean the fans did they come on full at the same time as the engine check light came on


Is your car strugling to get to the the half way temperature by any chance

The temp gauge is unusually low.

I am guessing the light came on while coasting

common problem with thermostate | FIAT Panda (Mk3)

when the weather get cold we get loads of cooling issues heaters only blowing warm P0115 error radiator fans coming on fast. gauge dropping down occationly. gauge only going up 1/4 way 90% are down to a missing rubber gasket inside the thermostat. Because the thermostat is opening and...

I suspect the rubber seal in the thermostat has perished

It's pretty easy to check with a cold engine

If you haven't got a code read it will clear after 5 good starts or is it 10

Yeah, the thermostat is most likely the problem.
They really went extreme with that 'Engine failure' notice!
Check engine logo is bad enough, to see it pop up I mean.
