Technical Engine Failure - What diagnostics do I need?

When driving to work my Idea flagged up "Engine Failure" and has had an amber engine light on, and flags this error whenever I start the car. In the owners handbook it is listed as INEFFICIENT EOBD/INJECTION SYSTEM. From reading around it appears this can mean a cable/sensor is loose to somehow having disfavoured the Dark Gods. Apart from this I haven't noticed any actual fault when driving (car was not in limp mode, power seemed ok, drove just like any other day), but naturally I drove 60MPH to work just incase.

A re-occuring theme is to get a diagnostic tool such as ELM327/OBD2/EOBD, so that you can getter a more accurate read of the problem. Im unsure which (if any) would be suitable for my car. Any help in pointing me to the right tool would be much appreciated.
