hi all, right i hope this all makes sence.
Ive had my 1.4 500 2008 for about 2 months(and love it i might add),all has been well. but today after i popped to the supermarket, i came back to start the car and about four errors flashed up on the display (hill start disabled, ecu, power steering error, esp not working, and check engine).
After about 4 attempts of stopping and starting engine only one light remains. The engine warning light with the message "check engine".

This light will not go away, but the car seems fine to drive.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
The garage has done a diagnostic and seems to think that it just needs an "ecu reset to relearn".
does this sound right?
Thanks in advance. Laura.

Hello.

Well if they have hooked it up to diagnostics didnt they just reset it since it was connected anyway? Diagnostics usually is right so if the reset solves the problem then no worries!

Have you tried disconnecting the battery ?
Suggest for a minute or 2 and if it's still not resolved then possibly 20 minutes.
Still reckon it needs to get hooked up to the examiner so it will possibly cost you a half hour's labour.

I had to limp my poorly car to the dealer this evening, the check engine warning, esp, hill holder and stop/start disabled messages flashed up and there were 3 or 4 error lights lit up. When I started the engine it felt like there was no power to the cylinders and I really had to push hard on the accelorator to get the car to crawl forward.

I had the errors appear at the start of last month, but we topped up the oil and got the garage next door to check the computer onboard and nothing much seemed to be wrong so they deleted the errors and it was fine until this week. The errors were there and sometimes not, it wasn't until this evening that I decided something is definately wrong. Anyway as it was 10 minutes before they went home they quickly hooked it up and checked, but the guy said there was nothing obvious. He deleted the errors and basically if/when it happens again I'll book it in to be looked at properly.

may be of help... had some auto gearbox problems with our other car. I took the car into an Auto Garage for diagnostics who said come back after an hour, the guy pulled three codes form the ECU, two I knew about and one new code. then he tells me it could be a faulty gearbox or ECU. Nothing like 50/50 opinion from a specialist. I know its not the gearbox as it works fine after an ECU reset.

Anyway to cut a long story short, I was charged £60 for a 2 minute job, the guy had just hooked an OBD2 reader (with a printer) to the interface under the dash and printed 3 codes. I have subsequently bought a £17 OBD2 reader from ebay and have been pulling the same codes and resetting the ECU and made the car usable, the ECU has now been sent for repair.

If you are up to it invest in an OBD2 reader, you don't have to reset the codes yourselves but will know what the issues are.

Any experts out there want to add more ?
