I recently bid on an item on ebay but lost the bid.

Not really thinking too much more about it I rec'd an email this morning (but only picked it up a moment ago) to say that the seller had made a second chance offer.

I was really chuffed and logged on to find that it says "Expires 5th July 10am", so carried on. But there was no buy it now?

Looks like the seller has put the item on from 4th - 5th July but only selected 9am - 10am on the 4th.

Is this a possible mistake to make? Or have I lost it? :(

I have sent the seller a PM

Don't understand what you've said.

They've given you a 2nd chance offer, but now relisted it for a day

I've had a message come through via my ebay account & ebay offering me the item again.
It says the item is valid from 4th - 5th July - BIN
But I've looked at it and the seller has put valid from 4th July from 9am-10am

I think he meant to put valid from 4th at 9am - 5th at 10am

The seller might have shill bidded on it (ie bid on it himself) and then when he won, gave you the chance to buy it....

2nd chance offers usually don't appear until the 'buyer' has either failed to pay up, or decided they didn't want it....

If the 2nd chance offer appears soon after the listing ended, there's a good chance it was shill bidding....

Make sure, if this is the case, that you aren't paying over the odds for the item....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh never thought of that

They've been in touch since saying they accidentally sent me the item with a BIN at a low/er price and won't let it go that cheap

I do not fully understand eBay but how easy is it to "accidentally" send a bidder a 'second chance'. Does the seller not have to click to agree before sending it?

Make a reasonable offer (below your limit) and be prepared to haggle. If it's a genuine mistake, fair enough. If he's trying to pull a fast one... dob him in! Cheeky b*stard!

To be fair, it is possible that the seller has more than one of the thing he's selling. They'd only list one as an auction to avoid oversupply driving the price down, i.e. let the bidders fight over one.

Then, if anyone else bids a decent price then make a 2nd chance offer. I think it also avoids them paying a listing fee too.

a second chance offer is sent at the bidders highest bid(unless they have changed it)
so the seller doesnt set the price

As above.
You need to be careful with these offers though.
A seller may shill to find out your highest bid then withdraw at the last moment leaving you to pay waaaay more than you should.
They may get caught out & simply report the bidder (themselves) as NPB, giving them the chance to sell to you at your highest bid (again, you pay more than you really should)
Or it could be a fraudster . They have been known to send out bogus second chance offers. (click this link to take you to the auction (aka, their version of the auction))
