i put a cd-rw in my disc drive on friday night and when i tryed to view the files the disc drive started making loads of noise (like it does when your burning a disc) after several attemots to do this a message eventually came up saying "please insert a disc into cd-drive"
i thought the cd-rw may have been blank so tryed another disc but found out that it will not read any discs at all now. when i put them in the light on the drive flashes a few times but then nothing happens. when i try to access it through my computer it says please insert a disc. i checked the device manager and it says the device is workin properly. i then checked the event log viewer and there was a message on the log saying that "the cd-drive disappeared off the system without warning". i havent a clue what to so here and its really pi**ing me off.

ive never heard of anything like this happening to someone before so if anyone has any ideas i would really appreciate the help.

Sounds like its scuppered.

From what you say the actual unit cannot get the information off the disc, so it could be a laser problem or mechanical problem rather than software.

I got scared this weekend when I bought a new album and put it in my (expensive) CD player. It made the worse noise ever then said no disc, and wouldnt eject.

Put the disc in a walkman and it worked, put it back in the seperate, more noises then 'no disc'. No marks on the disc, but when i checked the disc, the hollow centre wasnt perfectly round. 2 seconds with a penife and it plays ok now!

You could try uninstalling and re-installing the drive, do the uninstalling from Device Manager then restart the machine and add hardware from CP.

What OS do you run?
