hello everyone
i have a Hymer motorhome that has a 2.8 ducato engine year 2000 serviced every year cam belt was changed 9000 miles ago (just over 3 years ago) we were on the motorway doing about 60 when the engine died felt like it locked up and slight smell of burning rubber. had the van towed home on trying the ignition it just clicked as if the engine was locked up so i thought the worse and assumed the cam belt had snapped, a couple of days ago i took the small cam belt cover off the top of engine and the cam belt is in place and tight so dont think it has slipped and jumped a tooth after trying the ignition several times the engine or what ever was sticking has freed off so the engine nows turns over on the key but is not firing so the question is where do i start looking how does the fuel pump work is it mechanical or electrical could it be the alternator locked up if there was no output from the alternator would this shut the engine down. being in a motorhome the access is terrible and i dont have access to a lift all help gratefully received

Hi :)

If it was the alternator.. you would get a hot..rubbery smell

But potentially the battery symbol: charge light too

Basic checks..
its not unheard of for the main battery negative cable.. going to chassis and engine to go crusty internally

Could be a good place to start..

See if you can hear the pump in fuel tank whirring.. and if power is getting to glow plugs

Both of these only happen for @10 seconds on turning key to the MAR stage where the dash does its self.test

Check to see what lights..and what goes off in 10 seconds ;)

The 2.8 JTD common rail injection engine was introduced in 2000. As the vehicle is a motorhome, conversion may have been a year later than base vehicle build. This raises the possibility that the engine may be either 2.8 JDT (type 8140.43s), or the earlier or 2.8 idTD (type 8140.43). The JDT is a common rail engine with electromagnetic injectors, while the idTD has mechanical injectors.

In the absence of a ledgible label on the engine cover, perhaps the easiest way to identify a 2.8JTD engine is by the four injector cables at the RHS (as viewed) end of the cover, immediately behind the engine lifting bracket.

In both versions, the injection pump is mechanically driven from the cam belt. In the idTD the pump sends fuel to the injectors at the correct time, while on the JTD the high pressure pump supplies a common rail or manifold.

As both engine versions are direct injection they do not use conventional glowplugs, but instead a thermal flame starter is used at temperatures below 0C. This starter is akin to a small blow torch in the inlet manifold.

Just to bring you up to date i found the wire had come off the back of the fuel pump so re fitted this and the van is now fueling and trying to fire but still not starting I found when I took the oil cap off there was a lot of fumes/smoke coming out of here is this just because of all the fuel going in but not firing
