I thought the flap operated in completely the opposite to what is commonly perceived in that it is predominantly activated to the closed position when switching off the ignition, aiding the stopping of the engine by shutting off the airflow but returning to the open position ready to start the engine again - have I got that wrong?
Very old systems did "anti shudder valves" but the "throttle valves" predominantly with a throttle portion sensor are to do with how much exhausted is rerouted to the inlet for emmision control.

Get view of the throttle flap when attempting to start engine.....if flap closes fully when trying to start there is a problem with it

Ok, so the takeaway from this is that the "throttle valve" is now the EGR and only sucks in part of the exhausts (emission control)?
I might try again tomorrow.

Also had the mechanic scan the vehicle with his diagnostic tool. No results.
He also tried starting it using start spray. Recorded the attempt, will share it tomorrow if anyone is curious to hear the compression etc.

According to the mechanic, it might be the injector(s)...

Not really no-There is an egr valve and the throttle valve that work together to reduced emissions.

If the throttle valve fully closes when engine is trying to start the engine won't get enough air to start.
Do a video of throttle valve when engine cranking to show action of throttle valve.

I took some videos while the mechanic was trying to start the engine.

video 1: longer cranking

Video 2: him trying with start spray.

The throttle valve is usually located between the intercooler outlet and the inlet manifold. If it sticks closed when starting, then minimal air into engine.......
Nothing to compress, or burn fuel with.
Got it. I'll try to reach that in that case. The part I took pictures of is located in front of the engine block, close to the fan. There's a thick, very soft hose feeding it with air.

Shows throttle body " flap"
Video of what "flap" does when engine cranking please
If it shuts when engine cranking that will stop engine from starting

Sounds very much like an engine receiving no fuel and/or air.

Use your obd reader to monitor fuel pressure whilst cranking - what does it show static and whilst cranking.

Revisit & reset the inertia switch.

Can you hear the low pressure pump in the tank running?

Definitely definitely check the throttle valve position.

You made a good video showing throttle valve staying open during cranking=appears correct operation of throttle valve.

You could spray start spray directly into throttle if you wish to try ....the spray will have less far to travel before reaching cylinders.

If you video results people can comment

See what you think, personally when it tried to fire on "easy start" in earlier video I felt it was only on two cylinders.

Hi Mike, I really can't tell 🙄 so frustrating to be at a distance unable to get hands on.
Best Jack

I hear what you mean, but at one point I heard it run fairly normally (all 4)

Like in the 2nd of these latest videos, it starts out sounding like a 50 year old canal boat :ROFLMAO: , then at 5 (and at 13) seconds it suddenly sounded good !!

Here:

Just watch the timeline at bottom whilst listening.

Totally agree
