General Driving in snow and ice

General Driving in snow and ice

Just returned to Kent from a family visit to Lincolnshire. Very heavy snow the whole visit and my 500 (diesel) didn't put a foot wrong. At one point in Scunthorpe it was the only car to pass a line of stuck vehicles on a hill during in a snow storm. You should have seen them all with their feet to floor and wheels spinning like the clappers while I drove sedately past them...
Haha, I can imagine :D (not that far way, just the other end of the '180 lol)

I think it's funny watching all the older drivers in their bigger cars struggling round town, especially when you get the younger drivers in small cars (and older drivers in small cars (y)) just pootling along with no problems :D

...I think that a skid pan training should be a requisite part of the driving test and all people who have already passed their test should have to take it too...
You're not alone there!! I'd love to it, partly because it's something a bit different, but mostly because I think it's a very useful skill to have!!

Played about in an empty car park practising skids and hand brake turns - highly amusing and great fun - will I ever grow up :D
As the old saying goes: Growing OLD is Compulsory. Growing UP is Optional

I tried to explain the concept of high gear, low revs to a friend last night, and it was lost on them. I agree with skid pan training, and also motorway and night time driving tuition being compulsory.

On Saturday afternoon I drove up my parents' road (steepish hill, ungritted, packed ice) in my heavy S-Max, I was in 3rd gear with the engine ticking over (it's a diesel) and the car just pulled me up the hill at 15 mph with no drama. After I'd parked on their drive I heard a revving, skidding and scraping noise, a minute or so later a Renault Clio appeared round the bend at the same sort of speed that I'd just been going but obviously in 1st gear and he was bouncing from one kerb to the other.

Well I got rear ended by a red suzuki swift and a crazy lady driver on Sunday. No significant damage just a rear bumper chrome surround to be replaced.

Lady's quote kind of made up for the snow/ice accident after we got out of our cars

"Oh so sorry I have no idea my brakes could lock so quickly...my car didn't even display the ice warning'

So all the visible ice on the road and falling snow didn't give you a hint that it was icey?!?!

For someone who's so happy with your car, you're remarkably defensive about it.

Or maybe you're just a t*t :p

EDIT: *awaits "UR JUS JELUS OF MY MINT MOTOR" comment*

Yeah, spell it out. ****.
Look, I didn't call you a name but if it makes you feel all growed up then carry on.
As for your comment, It's not a them and us argument I'm making.

The Fiat 500 1.2 Sport that I owned was a great car. I still recommend them to anyone who's interested.
The Abarth 500 that I own is a much better car.
That's my assessment as an engineer and driving enthusiast. Call it opinion if you like. You really need to have owned both to be able to talk with any authority on the subject. A test drive isn't enough.
For the other guy who thinks the A500 is just a tarted up 1.4 T Jet ask yourself why people don't just buy a Fiat 500 1.4 T Jet instead. Silly statement of the year really.

Whoa, easy boy! Was a tongue-in-cheek comment. I'd still like to know why you feel the need to be so defensive.

Also: T-I-T has three letters, not four. And as an engineer-to-engineer moment, learn the difference between assessment and opinion (y)

For people who want to spend as little as possible on fuel, tax and insurance, and still have a neat little car, the 1.2 is the better car

And probably easier to deal with on snow and, er, ice...because of the narrower tyres etc..

Just had to :p

Now if they did a stripped out Abarth, with Essesse suspension/wheels (love the white wheels), no A/C, lighter seats, less sound insulation etc (like the Renaultsport cup cars) then I'd be interested

This is why I want a Twingo RenaultSport Cup, the stripped version that costs just under £12,000 is a stunning little car IMO and apparently drives really well.
