My N/S driveshaft popped out of the gearbox when I caught the kerb when turning right into my drive. I managed to pop it back but it's popped out again.

I took it to the garage who said the circlip had broken but they couldn't get it seperate, so want to order a new driveshaft.

Surely the circlip for the gearbox end of the driveshaft is available seperately?

Any advice would be great. By the way it's a 2000 Punto Mk2 1.2 petrol manual.

Thanks,
Gary.

get a 2nd hand Drive-shaft
Stick some new boots and Fresh clean grease - plus you should get another clip

Win win win - as the shaft should be good for some more miles

Ziggy

Or...... get the part number for the circlip from the Forum's version of ePer. You can definately get them new, and cheaper than a secondhand shaft which may potentially have less 'life' left in it than your original.

46307551 from what the OP was saying.

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies. I was a bit worried that there could be more damage which was why I wanted to just try a new clip first and go from there.

D4nny8oy- thanks for alerting me to ePER - hadn't noticed it before!

Cheers all,
Gary.

Well, what's left of the clip will be floating about in the gearbox. If you're lucky it will find it's way to the magnet, but it would be wise to drain the 'box oil just in case (plus it will need topping-up anyway as some will have been lost when the driveshaft popped-free).

ok so thread is 2 years old bu son's mk2 punto has done exactly the same - o/s drive shaft popped out - got a new cv joint refitted it - not convinced the 'circlips' were the correct ones in the kit as they had 'prongs' which bent over into the spline recesses when fitting the joint - 1 mile is all it lasted back to square 1 - tried a local engineering shop but std circlips won't work as they cannot be compressed sufficiently to allow the open ends past the lip of the cv joint - also Haynes says 'drive past the ballbearing cage' & initial removal drift out so it drops into the recess groove on the cv joint to allow the shaft to be removed - can anyone enlighten me -- does the clip need to pass down the shaft, somehow over the groove and actually past the end of the female part of the CV joint? 2 thoughts - won't the clip actually drop into the groove that aids removal - does it need a hefty drift to get past the groove without damaging the circlip? if it's meant to sit in the groove it's not very far down the cv hub and thoughts of a 10p clip stopping the shaft pulling out on cornering is a tad thought provoking,,,,, can;t see any issue with the gearbox end ie the 3 spiders and spins over cleanly when in place... waiting a call back from local dealer

Having read the forum posts I thought something else must be adrift BUT what?? drive shaft into the gearbox, outer end into cv joint which must by definition be held in - by the circlip - ergo circlip fails and when cornering (son was going round a roundabout) allows sufficient travel for it to pop out - had a chat with a neighbour who is into old Minis and he said it was a common prob but not how to fix --- dealer (I've had a 16 year 'relationship' with them) has ordered clips (+ another hub nut for safety's sake) for less than £3 (downer is he has the nut in stock, clips even as a VOR order will be Friday) and agreed 1 of the mechanics will fit it all together so I know this will be correct and IF it fails it is indeed 'summat else' -- this is bugging me no end and wish the X-19 fitting had been utilised........ :bang:

agree - both wishbones (n/s is worst) are u/s -- next on purchase list --- Mm just who's car is this, oh yes youngests..... :)

collected circlips and suspn bolts from main dealer who'd agreed to fit cv to shaft --- 20mins later diagnosis = knackered shaft - wear on the splines - options, dress the splines no guarantees, new shaft & their recommendation - buy a preused shaft -- having forked out for new discs/pads/cv/bolts let's price up a new shaft -- time savings are important - 1 parts supplier £86+ vat delivery tuesday, t'other one £52+vat delivery Monday BUT had 1 in stock WHOOPEE - entire shaft ie outer cv, shaft, inner cv - counted splines 22 yes not 27 deal! how do u take out the inner cv from gearbox - initial thoughts a swift smack and lever out - an hour on u tube later - looks like a flange needs unbolting so making progress - wishbones are a most definite urgent replacement though as there's not a lot of contact length between g'box and shaft/cv UPDATE LATER

SHE RUNS ha ha ha ha -- u tube video was for n/side - I needed to get the inner CV joint out on the o/s - bit the bullet, small cold chisel and rubber mallet (3lb lump hammer was in reserve!) 2 smacks and it moved - 4 gentle drift taps and it was in my hand (marg carton in place to catch g/box oil) new shaft in wheels back on ground in under an hour (OK OK all nuts are by now 'loose' / easy to get off but I did replace during todays shaft change the mounting bolts stub axle to MacP strut with proper Fiat ones - no messing when it comes to suspn in my view) Torqued up the hub nut, topped up gearbox - job done for under £100 add to which the new clutch £46 the new discs and pads and I'm a lot happier youngest son has a car that is safe - PLUS the look on his face when we rolled up to collect him from work in HIS car was worth every cut/graze/bruise getting 12 year old bolts undone :)
