i have another question (im full of them) in lots of threads it says about rusty bolts and some need replacing where do this normaly appear then???
The b is full of rusty bolts!!
Fairly much any nut or bolt that comes into contact with the crappy salted UK roads is susceptible to rusting, favourites are the bolts on the bottom of the manifold where it joins the downpipe, nut's and bolts that hold on the brake lines and heat shields under the car and any nuts and bolts that are located inside the wheel arches.
Don't worry too much, the car will not fall apart overnight but when a bolt shears it can turn a 1/2 hour job into a 3 hour job drilling and tapping the old nut/bolt out. Every time I do a job on the b I replace the nuts/bolts with new ones and make sure that they have a liberal coat of copper grease before putting them on the car. Also worth making sure that you power wash under the car and wheel arches every few months and give the underside a coat of waxoyl once or twice a year.
Rust spots on the body to be aware of are under the lights, inside the sills where the body meets the floor, jacking points on the floor, at the very top of the rear wheel arches (quite a lot of road dirt collects there and its difficult to see and reach), on the rear wings where they meet the sills and rear wheel arches, also keep and eye on the engine mounts and structure around the bottom of the engine bay.
Don't get me wrong the b is not a rust-bucket, it is a lot more resilient to rust than a lot of other cars being built at the same time as the body is galvanised but it was built for the Mediterranean market - not the cold, wet, salty roads of the UK!!
