Do the big ends or is it a new engine ??

I have been told the big ends are going on my 69000 mile 1999 115 1.8hlx.
The car other than this is in first class condition.
Its annoying because the car has been serviced from new.
Id appreciate any advice on the pros and cons of the 2 options and the financial implications

Hard to say.

Its not going to be cheap either way

if the big ends have gone then there is a possibility that all the other bearing surfaces in the engine may be in the same condition.

You may have to do the cams, small ends blah de blah de blah.

However if you go for a replacement engine you don't know how that will have been treated in the past.

Getting to the big ends to change them is a fairly big job so will cost you quite a bit in labour charges (unless you do it yourself).

Then again an engine swap will probably cost you a bit too.

a guaranteed reconditioned engine might be the most cost effective way to go

Next enigne is much eaiser plus might aswell grap dan's C&B cam's while your at it.

rebiuld the engine fit low compression forged pistons and rods and turbo the buggar

Thanks very much for the suggestions,anyone else have any idea of the cost involved doing the big ends.
Ive been quoted £700 for a px reconditioned engine not including fitting

surely you could get a rebuild for your old engine for cheaper than that? i got rebuilt my calibra 16v redtop engine..new shells, valves,etc -cost me £650 3yrs ago. could have had recon for £500 but you never know how long is going to last. i know most are warrantied but you never know!


i would never pay that for a recon.. pay the money and get your current engine rebuilt
