DIY garage inspection Pit

Anyone ever dug out their own inspection pit in their garage?

I am seriously considering this with 4 cars at our house it would be a definite asset...

Truly an asset when doing your own repair mate..I have one but cant get in the garage and the pits full of sh*t left by the previous owners..still haven't had the incentive to clean it out..

Dig hole ..check..

Concrete in a base..check

Brick up inside..check

If its a deep one include some steps..check..

And don't brick or incarcerate yourself in..check..

The idea would be to locate it properly Mate ..you know make sure the car can get over without to many problems..mark out the floor with the size and then dig for Britain while checking you are keeping fairly square as you go down..I helped my dad years ago putting a cess pit in his barn ..now that was the mother of all inspection pits ..before it was filled with crap that is..

Check for services running under the dig point (water, gas, electricity) get a surveyors report, cost it... Do it properly if you do it at all I say.

Make sure you get the necessary statutory consents as well, check with your local council for what you need. I'd expect that you'll need a building warrant as the digging may have an impact on any compacted material beneath the garage/house. And make sure that your wall is well designed to withstand any horizontal pressure from the soil as well.

Other than that...good luck if you go ahead with it.

you really need to make it solid last thing you want is it to implode when you drive a car over it as the side loading from the cars wheels could cause you problems



the base should slope to one end and cast a sump into that end so any spillages can be collected

i'd forgo the brick idea and get some shuttering ply and reinforcing wire and cast the walls in situ
