imo the 156 deserves to be on that list. towing in comfort and style isnt a bad thing you know.

Yes the croma has a max tow weight of 1500kg, that is for all models perfect for what I need.

My short list is

Croma
C5
Primara
BMW 320d
Saab 93
Octavia 4x4
407

Primara?

Are you talking about the Nissan Primera? The third generation of that car was discontinued because of very poor sales after perhaps just three years inb production.

thats the one.

Same tow weight as croma 1500kg, same tax bracket D but no particulate filter. also Japanese reliability(y) but no sole:(

Hello,

I've just got back from a 250 mile trip towing a 1400Kg caravan with my recently-bought 2.4JTD Croma. Stability is great, gear rations are less than ideal from a fuel economy point of view if you're doing a lot of hills (only drops into 5th on light load and 6th only comes in at 65mph anyway) but it's nice to be able to out-accelerate other traffic without too much effort :D - my previous car was a VW Sharan 2.8 and there's no comparison from a performance point of view.

Only thing I am going to change about my car is to fit 16" wheels rather than the standard 18" - my wife has a back problem and the ride is just that bit too hard when towing (tramlines a bit too). I've only done just over 2000 miles in mine now but my verdict so far is that it's a great all-rounder which will easily crack 40MPG when driven sensibly.

Oh, as far as the DPF does, the car displays a message when it's clogged, and according to the manual it's only a case of leaving the car idling for a while (can't remember exactly how long) while it goes through the cleaning cycle. Hope this helps.

16V every time, the purchase price, insurance and emissions are so similar that you'd be mad to miss out on the extra performance if you're going to be towing. Good luck if you decide to get one, it feels like a leap into the unknown but it's a 2002 model vectra underneath so it's not exactly unknown technology , the only weird one is the 2.4 due to so many areas of the car being designed specifically for the power unit. What have I done!!!:D

Yup, 2.4 JTD Prestigio with grey Castiglio, I must put a picture on my profile when I get around to it. These cars are an absolute bargain second-hand, given the equipment spec and performance available. It's easy enought to get a 1.9 but there haven't been any 2.4 diesels on autotrader since I bought mine at the beginning of March! I've now managed to get hold of a new set of 16" wheels from a Saab 9-3 so will be selling the 18s if the new wheels fit OK. Anyway, must stop hijacking this rather useful thread...!

The blokes in my local motor factors said it is important to use a low sulfa oil in cars with DPF's. Is this true or just another motoring myth.

DPF's with an effective self-regenerating cycle do not need low sulphur fuel, but all others should use low sulphur. all diesel sold in the uk for use in cars is low sulphur.

Can't speak on behalf of the Nissans but any Croma Multijets should have Selenia WR (fully synth). It's not cheap but there's no fixed service interval - it only needs changing when the 'Exhaust Oil(?)' light comes oon the dash, or every two years, whichever is sooner. I would suggest that fully Synthetic oil would be A Good Idea for anything with a DPF, due to Synthetic oil not burning as easily as mineral. Personally, given the cost of engine overhaul or replacement for a modern diesel, I'd put good oil in if I was keeping it for a while...hope this helps.

 well thats what I thought, just another myth.

I change the oil in any car every 6 month or 6,000 miles anyway
