Technical Desperate re engine management

I have had the engine management light on my 500x Cross + Multijet for some considerable time. I took it first to a local garage which told me i needed to take it to the Fiat dealer,
I have a brand new battery which needs mentioning first.
The Fiat diagnostics showed i needed a coolant temperature sensor i paid £108 for the diagnostics. then a further £80 plus for the sensor fitting.

I collected the car, and the engine light was off i parked at home and went to it next morning and yes, it was back on again. It went back to Fiat and it then needed a thermostat housing. I gave the go ahead, but this was a special order and took five weeks to arrive. It was fitted at a cost of £221 and lo and behold the light was off again. HOWEVER, next morning on starting the light was back on again and is still on 4 days later.
Over £400 spent and no sign of the fault being fixed. The car runs fine with no problems just the stop start and traction switch do not work. No biggi but if it's fitted it ought to be working.

Can anyone please help as even the Fiat dealership appears to know no more than i do at the minuet and i feel like i am :bang:

This sounds terrible and possibly smacks of incompetence. (Just my personal opinion).

The fees charged also seem very dubious to me.

You do not say where you are located? If in southern England then you should look at using "Small Car Services". Dean (owner) and Ben are all Fiat trained master Technicians who I trust.

They also have the full Fiat manufacturers diagnostic kit and relevant subscriptions. Read dealer capability and experience at sensible independent small operation prices.

If you have a laptop I would suggest getting hold of a copy of MES (Link) which is an invaluable tool for our cars.


You don't state the year of your car but if it's 2018 or later make sure you read the section about SGW on the "Supported Vehicles" page

The Garage is Cars 2 Fiat in Barnsley. so a certified Fiat Dealer, i would have hoped they would be able to sort it quickly. The year is 2015 less than 45 thousand on the clock.

You want to see the price they gave me for timing belt and brakes .

Hi look to see if there are Any AlfaRomeo specialists near you..

They wont do warranty work.. so survive by knowing what they are doing..and having happy customers

Fiat/Alfa/Lancia have been closely related since the 1970's.. so they will have all the correct kit

Hello. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Out of curiosity, is your ambient temperature sensor also reading wildly out by chance. I'd be interested to hear if it is and particularly so if it says the outside temperature is in the high 40's or even 50 degC?

Yet again, back to the garage. kept 2 days and new parts reinstalled, wiring checked and new ends in some cases. Collected and engine light was off. Parked at home and next day on first start the light was back on.

Now i have to leave it with them a "few" days but with a loan car.

Well I think you have a right (even though out of warranty) to raise a complaint with Fiat Customer Care that their franchised dealer can't diagnose and fix a 2015 or later MODERN Fiat.

If nothing else the dealer should be contacting their Fiat Technical Support Line for guidance and advice etc. For all we know they may have already done this but who knows?
