Technical CRAZY odometer/tripometer!

The odometer on my bravo sx has gone mad! The car runs fine but when you turn the ignition it firstly displays all 8's, then F's, then L's then what its supposed to (ie. trip and milage). I can't reset the tripometer either now!! Any ideas please??

this usually happens when you do not disconnect the battery prior to doing some work on the car, especially the electrics. leaving the battery disconnected for an hour can fix it sometimes, but not always.
