If you know which file contains the virus use a Win98/MSDOS Boot disk, navigate to the file and delete it.
sorry for sounding thick, but iam old school and know SFA about PC'S.the XP2 is sh**e i think.can you explain more please? will restoring the PC help?

Restoring the PC might help depending on what the viruses intent is, you can only try then hope it starts :D

Are you sure it is a virus and not just the last thing you installed?

Luciel is right though, get rid of Norton and and that gansta rapper M.C Afee!

They both do more damage then a real virus. If you hve recently unistalled either of the two then this might be the cause of your computer malfinctions.

I'm presuming you do not have a PC running Windows 98 anywhere so what you can try and do is use that thing on the WinXP CD called the Recovery Console but to use this you'll need to be experienced with DOS commands.

CD
REN
DEL
CD..
CD\

Mean anything to you?

If not I can explain and you can use these commands to navigate to the folder where the file is and then delete it.

Right get that WinXP CD to the ready and Boot with it.

When asked choose the option which says something about the "Recovery Console"

Once its started you may be asked to log in or choose a Windows Directory you wich to log into.

Do this by pressing the number next to the list which may consist of only one item.

Then log in using your password if required. You will be presented with a black screen that looks something like this:

C:\>_

Do you know the Directory/Folder where the misbehaved file is? You will have to change to that Directory.

CD = Change Directory

Type in:

CD

Then the full path to where the virus is e.g:

CD windows\system32\im_here

If you know the file name type in "DEL" followed by the file name e.g:

DEL virus.exe
(DEL means Delete)

At this point you may be told the file is read only, not to worry. Type in

ATTRIB virus.exe -s -h -r
(attrib means Attributes as in Files attributes)

Then try to delete it again using the "DEL" command.

If that file was the cuprit, once its gone you should be back to normal. if not write me back and I'll try to assist you some more.

Good luck (y)

Are you sure Safe Mode does not work?

Kept tapping F8 while booting?

Can you get into the broken Windows at all?
iam using the PC as i write this, and its working perfectly.what do you think?carry on as normal or try to fix it? when i ran AVG,it said this virus was embedded[dont know which programme].have now uninstalled AVG because it would not work properly.with AVG,do you have to uninstall norton 2005?:)

Sometimes (Regularly) Virus scanners give false alerts to things it mistakes for viruses.

It often mistakes installers for Trojans as when you run an installer they extract files then run up to 3 or more progams at once.

This is why you are often told to disable virus scanners when installing something.

If your computer is working ok then leave it, what is the file name of the virus or what is it embedded in?

If you can unistall Norton you are the man, that bastard usually does not want to leave. but yeah, get rid of it as soon as!

I tell you something, I run this computer without a Virus scanner and its that fastest thing alive.

Just be safe, operating a computer is like sex but without all the juices and the babies and the fun

Download BlackICE PC Protection from www.ISS.net

ok,ive uninstalled norton2005,installed spybot and that has cleaned the system i hope.anything else i should do?:)
