Hey all,

does anyone know if there is another gearbox I could use for my

Petrol, J reg (1992) 1.6 (1582cc) Single Point Injection, Manual Transmission, Red Tipo?

Think the chassis is 0466 0819

Maybe something lighter, from a Bravo, slighty better performance or better gear ratio? I have no idea who to ask on the subject except you guys.

Thanks (y)

I believe the Main Shaft Bearing has gone and now I'm seriously lackin performance. I struggle to keep up with 1.nuffins

On top of that now, sometimes the Box makes loud Snapping sounds when pulling off in a forward or reverse gear and even when going from gears 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.

The initial cluckity noise is getting louder, or maybe I'm paronoid. In anycase when my foot is to the floor the engine makes a lot of noise but that noise is not converted into power and disappears somewhere.

I was following a mate home lastnight when she decided to boot off in her 1.0 suzuki something or other that looks like a Daewoo Matise. I had to shift to second and get to max revs then third and get to max revs then struggled to catch her in forth where as, back in the day, I could catch a BMW 318is in third no problem.

Tipo feels weak and my philosophy is if your gonna replace/buy something might aswell replace it properly or buy high quality.

I'm going to change the clutch (Black Diamond Uprated) at the same time I change the Gearbox so was wondering if there is something better on another car that would fit mine with no expensive modding required.

Maybe an Alfa Romeo Box or one of them Boring Fiats which people aint ripped to peices. I'll have to go scrap yard to get a replacement as I can't afford a brand new one.

Just poking my oar in here...talking of gearboxes...i remember someone saying that the gearbox in the tipo needs topping up with oil but i cant seem to find anyway to top it up...and because mines a 1995 ( cant find a manual anywhere!! :bang: ) i dont know what oil to put in it. Im having problems getting it in and out of gear so i think that this might be the proble...the clutch seems fine..done the usual tests e.g. putting it in 5th and trying to pull away.

The gearbox from the 2.0 16V Turbo Coupe will fit if you put it in along with the engine (y)

Use some Selena Synthectic Oil, I'll get the number on it soon.

Try Tightening the Gear Changing Rods, It might also be that your gearbox Synchro's are not synchronised anymore. I've been told that this can be repaired but you might as well get a new one as it will be cheaper on labour.

Well duh :p

If anyone has any further info regarding my swap please let me know soon as. another reason why I dont want a second hand Tipo Box is because its more likely to be older so more worn then a recent compatible model box.

I'm sure me Box is almost dead, Tipo seems to get slower n slower every journey and the mad sounds are discomforting.

Thanks again (y)

ok ill try that trancentral...but where would i put the oil...i cant find a hole to stick it in!!!

You have to as I've seen pump it in from the bottom, you can't poor it in the top as there sump screw is on the bottom of the box.

It looks like an upside down bottle cap, think you can use a large alan key to open it I think. Its clearly visible if you lie down and look under the car (if its not lowered)

I watched mine get changed at a garage I always go to. the car had to be put on a ramp and the oil in a bottle with a pump. unless they were just taking a short cut. I aksed why does he need the pump and how am I meant to change the oil myself and he said it was the only way. He might have been pullin my leg because I know him but I doubt it.

Well i never thought of that....i have to admit thats how i used to have to do it on my opel manta..ill look thx mate

are you sure its not the clutch ? with the engine off,try moving the gear leaver through the gears.if its easy, then its your clutch.if not its a linkage wear problem or internal gearbox problem.replace gearbox only with another tipo gearbox.

thats for you.give it a try.

Ok I tried, Some gears go in smooth, some don't. When I press the clutch I can then engage them but these gears differ each time I run through the gears while the engine is off.

e.g:
run 1: Gear 3 did not engage
run 2: Gear 5 did not engage
run 3: all engaged
run 4: Gear 1 & 4 did not engage

So does that mean its not the clutch... or not just the clutch? I'm going to try and tighten the gear rods tomorrow and WD40 them see if that makes a difference but from the way the car is givin me high revs and no speeds I don't think its the links and it seems to most likely be the Gear Box :(

Another Question, Anyone know where to get reconditioned Gear Boxes? or how much I'd be looking at to get my one fixed? They are going for £75 in the scrap yard near me but I dont want to buy another dodgy gearbox, they just come out of scraped cars so no way to know how they will perform until you fit it and try and drive (n)

If The Gearbox Is Knackered,it Would Be Noisy.you Have Simply Got A Worn Clutch.change It.!!

The noises im getting are:

a kind of "rolling" rattle sound in neutral with the clutch not pressed. when i put my put down on the clutch it goes away.

also when driving, sometimes after longish periods when I pull away from a stationary position there is a fairly loud snapping noise (sounds like "TUCK!") that me and my passengers can hear with the window down. this happens in gears 1, 2 and Reverse and sometimes 3.

I don't even have to pull off to hear this sound last time I checked I was stationary in gear with the clutch down and a gave the car a little bit of revs and there was that snapping sound again. I don't know where its coming from but I can only imagine.

When there are more then 2 people inthe car including me the driver, the car struggles to move and when I finished a journey at an average speed of 45mph with 3 people I parked up and could smell burning clutch from my car.

EDIT: I thought it unlikley to be the clutch as it was changed just over a year ago but I don't know if it was a cheap one or not. From now on I buy parts myself.. like I have been for ages.

That's the tranny bearing, it'll eventually begin to leak and the gearbox will need a rebuild. The clutch throwout bearing would be the opposite and make a whining sound when you push in the clutch;)

ok,the noise before you push the pedal in is a thrust bearing.the cracking/tuck noise will be the pressure plate breaking up.as i said, all you need is a new 3-in -1 clutch kit.straight forward on a tipo to do.

How do you figure that!! The thrust bearing will only whine when it spins under pressure, if the clutch is not pressed then it's barely spining so it has to be the tranny bearing which will only make noise when spining under load, when the clutch is pressed in the thrust bearing removes some load from the shaft and it gets quiet;)

you have answered your own question.he says it makes a noise until he presses the clutch in.so its thrust bearing.he has hardly any acceleration but lots of revs.so its a slipping clutch.the snapping noise could be a cv joint.same with the tuck noise.
