Technical Compatible GearBoxes

This discussion is good, I'm learning a lot. You'll both (Sumplug & Smokeme) be up for rep points :)

If anyone else has any comments please feel free to add.

A recondotioned GB is looking like £495 which I'd rather not spend for no reason (n)

I've been quoted replacing the GB & Clutch will cost me £150 excluding parts. I wouldn't like to pay for labour twice either in case it is the GB as well as the clutch (n)

to save yourself time and money, why dont you get it checked out first?i still know you want a clutch kit.but get it checked for your own piece of mind.

I'm not sure about this specific problem, but I'm sorting out an Ebay Tipo with a transmission noise, and I agree - get it checked by a specialist gearbox / clutch garage. I paid £20 for Alan Voigts in Wallasey to diagnose a worn input shaft bearing, they said it will fail and dump oil into the clutch, maybe this has happened to you. Anyway they quoted £370 (+ vat) to drop the gearbox, fix bearing (costing £12 !) and refit box, or £130 if I remove / replace the box and they do the rebuild - not bad although you're now in the realms of "is it worth it for the value of the car" etc etc. Any garage will want to see the car "in person" befor advising.

Oh yes, by the way I was offered a gearbox via 247spares.co.uk for £100 + vat delivered, 66000 miles, 3months guarantee call andy allinson 01302 820280. My garage won't fit 2nd hand boxes, I'll probably do the rebuild.

sumplug, this is what i'm referring to. It could also be the worn clutch but the noise is the input shaft bearing, i've had a few with worn bearings.

thats why it needs to be checked out before it goes altogether.iam glad we all agree on the course of action!!!
