General cold cathode tubes

cheers tom :)

the blue set i have already dont have any computer fixing on them, so im gonna pinch the inverter and switch from that, they seemed to work ok when i wired them up briefly to test them a few months back

i will soon tell as they will be arriving next monday as im a cheap skate on p&p :D and dont really need them for a few more weeks, but i still need to make the number plate glow from behind to pass MOT, so gonna be bodging something together for this

thanks again everyone for all help :)

woohoo, the tubes came today, so im starting the lightbox for the number plate :D

but the ones that came have got all the computer connections on them and i cant find my old set which just had +/- and a switch :(

how would i go about wiring them up to my car

No sure, it depends what kinda connectors they are etc. If it's a four pin molex connector, then you should have 0V, 5V, 12V and erm, 0V I think, but I can't remember which order.

Ebuyer's cathode tubes work fine on a cars 12v supply, but computer ones are very fragile. I had some in my boot but they cracked so I gave up on them. Gaz, you'd probably be better off mounting the tubes where nothing can hit them and where they wont be bent.
Wiring: the yellow wire is the +12v and the black is the ground connection. Just use these, the 5v connector isn't even used for neons.

gaz, you need to use the lil bluey turqouisey box so cut the wire after that not before (ie you want when its working, your +/- followed by box, which then loops to cathode tube or two  )

eh  :p

the tubes will be behind the number plate, so it will shine through it, they will also be encased in a perspex box, which i started today :D

im searching high and low for the other set that i have cause they dont have the computer connections on them, but i think on that set, yellow is + and black is -

unfortunatly not alex :(

i might experiment myself with the wires, cause im thinking aslong as i got that little box and those little connectors that go into the box, then i should be alrite.....hopefully

whats the worst that could happen

haha, did you have to ask?!

lol

:p i was more concerned about what would happen to the tubes, will they explode, like some dodgy neons (n)

if my wiring catches fire at least i can put my extinguisher to good use :D
