Hi everybody! total newbie in here!

I need help on a coil pack change,I have a misfire and have been told to try the spark plugs,HT leads and coil packs,have done the plugs, no fix,am getting the coil packs and HT leads today.
Can anyone tell me what tools I need and how easy it is to change the coil packs?

I'm sure I saw a step by step guide in a link in one of the threads in here but I can't find it!!

Any help would be great.
 
its a simple allen key job :)

On the coil pack holder - there are 4x Allen keys for each pack

Disconnect 1 coil pack at a time
Remove bolts - pull out - New pack in - bolts tighten up

I wouldnt fit them fully till you've tested it to ensure the fault has been fixed, your only testing so engine wont be running for long
Just connect the coils up and rest them securly to see if fault is fixed or not

What cylinders are misfiring btw?

Hi,not sure which is misfiring,was told by a guy at work who is a mechanic to start up and remove the ht leads one at a time and the one that doesn't change the engine noise is the misfiring one,I wasn't to sure about leccy shocks though so didn't try.My uncle is a MOT tester and he says its most likely the coil pack,I'm picking them up today with new HT leads and will try that.When changing them do I need to remove anything other than the airbox to get access to the coil packs?

Not sure about the ECU,the coil packs are only £14 each though,its a nightmare,I'm an amature at fixing cars but this seems simple enough.
 
Have changed the plugs and thought I might aswell do the leads and coil packs at the same time,they look pretty easy to replace but access is tight making it proper fiddly though
 
I know what you're saying but hopefully it'll sort it,I've had two trustworthy mechanics tell me that's what is most likely wrong,if its anything more expensive I'm scrapping it,

as stated above work out which cylinder is not firing by removing the leads when engine is running which ever oine you pull out makes no different to engines running then itll be that one then switch the coils over to see if it moves or stays put if it moves then it could be the coils if it stays put then its something else i do have several spare coils sitting here which would be cheaper than £28 pm me if needed. scrapping it for this problem is plain daft as fingers said . do the test on ecu there is a guide in the punto section here

Now that is plain daft.

You will have the evil micro ECU, but it can be rebuilt for less than £150.

I think there's something on testing the ECU in the FAQs/guides.

what most places do is cleanse the eprom on a used working one either on a test bed or you can actually do it on the car now
this is why when you go to say upullit at york theyve all gone
personally if car kept in reasonable state of maintainance then to say these ecus are made of chocolate is just pure scaremongering having sold a few 5 million model puntos (ie fiat had sold 5 million so were celebrating the fact)from the 51 period so i cant believe theyve all gone faulty

to OP £14 for a coil pack sounds too cheap and a white box product i would rather find which coil pack is faulty and replace this if one has gone o/c

remember ecus usually only go because plugs and leads are left like a rotting teabag in a tramps cup until its too late

Where they go it's usually down to them being an early example of surface mount.

But, you have to ask, if there were no "real" issues, why did the Poles replace them with a much more reliable ECU for the later Sei?

The 5 million includes. I think, the Mk1, which has an exceptionally reliable ECU, and the Tubs, which had Bosch stuff (as I think the HGT did).
 
Well peeps I changed the plugs HT leads and both coil packs,still misfiring...will the ecu need resetting or has it been fried???
 
Hi and thanks for all the advice,I don't have any knowledge of scanning codes or access to any sort of code reader,so would have to take it to a garage,which I really can't afford right now,is there anything that could cause a misfire that I will be able to check/eliminate myself,without taking my engine/electrics apart or plugging a computer into it,bearing in mind that I'm not a mechanic? The exhaust baffle material has started coming out of the exhaust,looks like my engine sucked in a wig! could that have anything to do with it??
