Hello,
Today my '96 Fiat Punto 55 started to act really strange while driving. While the rpms are low, it acts like I'm not giving it enough gas (almost like trying to start out from a stop in say 4th gear).. Later on, I came back to the car to see the code light stay on and the fuel injector light come back on a second time and then go out.

After driving it even a few feet, it won't idle properly - the idle keeps going up and down constantly.

This happened once before, and the only place that was even able to figure it out was the dealership -- and it took them 2 days. Not sure the technical name for it, but they replaced the black plug and wire that plugs into sensor under the air filter cover. That was a year ago. I took a look at it today and nothing seems to be wrong with it.

I'm in Spain, so any help you guys can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like a lambda sensor problem, unless anyone knows better :)

This is the sensor fixed into the exhaust, near the engine.

If they're slow switching you don't get error codes, but the performance is poor.
If they fail short circuit you end up with a very rich mixture - and error light.

YMMV

It used to do this on ford escorts. Try removing the sensor and wiping on a soft cloth. If not try running some redex through to clean out the crap in your system

Lambda's seem to be a recurring fault on 55's, and they all do slightly different thing when it dies! I a 1994 55SX and this one is OK until it goes on a motorway - 5 mins of 70mph+, the light comes on and it limits the revs to 4500. Still acelarates fine, I just can't be arsed/afford to replace the sensor!
