My December '04 Multipla (1.9 JTD) has fallen prey to clutch problems.

I have been quoted £570, inc. vat, for clutch replacement; + £350, inc. vat, for DMF, if required; and £250, inc. vat, for timing belt (which I planned to have done this summer).

These are from the Fiat specialist (former franchise) who I have used for nearly ten years.

Do these prices look ok ?
I am guessing that they are on the high side, but not exorbitant for an established Fiat specialist. So I am thinking I will go with them, rather than going to someone I don't know to save a couple of hundred pounds. What do you think ?
Also important is that they can start the repair on Friday. How long should it take for a clutch / flywheel replacement by an experienced garage ?

I'm pretty sure it is the clutch which has failed. It has been making a tinny whirring sound for a while, when the clutch is depressed, but suddenly became much worse this morning. It became difficult, then impossible, to change gear with the engine running.
When the clutch is depressed (by even the timiest amount) there is a very loud squeal (similar to a slipping fan belt noise), and there is a pungent 'burning clutch' smell when I hold the clutch down.
With the engine off, I can change gear.

Certainly sounds like your clutch has gone, seems like the release bearing has gone. £920 is not cheap to fit a clutch and DMF but if you feel happier using this garage then pay the extra. They should be able to do it same day if they have the parts ready. It's about 5-6 hours work. Not particularly technical really, just a bit tedious.
