Hi folks, yet another problem!!! argghhhh

Was all good until I popped out for a wee spin on Saturday, and when releasing the clutch I get a shuddering/juddering. The clutch seems to operate perfectly well, this problem only happens in 1st gear, all other changes are sweet, no sticking, no slippage all fine.

Spoke to a local mechanic who reckons it could be the rear engine/gearbox mount, does this make sense? If so, should I change all the mounts (how many are there 3??) whilst he is underneath the barch?

I am loving and hating this car at the same time...........:

Cheers,

Mark

Rear engine/gearbox mount is a good possibility as this is the mount that stops the engine rotating along it's transverse axis. Also normally the one that will fail as it is the one that takes all the hard work/forces of accelerating and decelerating.

The "B" only has 3 engine mounts.

Personally only have the one (if it is this that has failed) replaced because these mounts at Fiat prices are not cheap.

In 2014 these mounts cost £90, £126 and £186 each inc. VAT from Fiat

However OEM/pattern parts ARE very much cheaper at around the £30 to £50 price range. Speak to your mechanic and get a quote for what he can get the parts for (or you source to him).

As the "B" has no engine under tray shield(s) to remove and mess with I would anticipate that all the mounts could be changed in 1 to 1.5 hours. The only reservation I have on this estimate is that I've not looked under our "B" so do not know if the rear mount is buried under the exhaust pipe?

Would add that clutch judder can be due to any number of reasons from a contaminated or worn/warped plate to a possible pressure plate issue.

Because of gearing then judder often happens at lower rpm values and lower gears (1st / 2nd) and clutch slippage in higher gears (4th/5th).

Your mechanic once the car is lifted should be able to readily check the mounts and advise further. With luck you have a mount issue as opposed to a clutch issue.

Ok so I bought one, will let you all know if it solves the problem. One thought, while cornering in low gear, normally only in second, while accelerating out of corner, I sometimes get what I figured was a misfire, but.... Could it actually be a engine mount induced shudder, similar to what I figured was the clutch? Might not make any sense, but all front wheel drive thing is new to me...

Cheers all..
