I'm starting to have a right problem getting my Mk 1 Punto into 1st & reverse, it will go in 1st but the sticks very stiff, reverse will only go in with force and it crunches horribly.

I've read about on here and I'm not sure if it needs a new clutch or maybe just a clutch/gearbox oil change, read somewhere it should be changed at 72k and mine has done 105k! Dunno if its been changed since 72k cos I only got it at 88k.

Its booked in for its mot next saturday, if its a new clutch thats needed I'm thinkin it might be best to get rid before shelling out a load of money.

also, If it is the oil change, is it easy enough to do myself?

Cheers.

1st gear on Punto's can be stiff when cold.
If reverse is crunching make sure the car is not rolling when you engage reverse gear.

It sounds like your gearbox oil could be low - try that first.

Oil changes are easy to do, there's a section in Haynes explaining exactly how. By the way, clutches aren't that expensive on small cars.

think about this logicly, if reverse is grinding then the clutch isnt
dis-enguaging fully, no amount of oil will change that.
its oviously something wrong with the clutch.

Rang one place an they want £68 for the clutch and £105 to fit it(+VAT)!!

Me mates dad's garage said about 160 all in for a new clutch, fitting and vat, but he also said it could just need a clutch/gearbox oil change.

Do these sound bout right?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Check the oil level in the gearbox before spending out on a new clutch! If clutch isn't slipping it should be ok. I had a 75sx which wouldn't go into reverse gear unless I held clutch down for a couple of seconds before trying to engage reverse, checked oil level and found it needed about half a litre to bring level up to full. This cured the problem completely :) Worth a try isn't it?

Chris Smith.
