Hi guys and girls

We took our trusty frog up to see the in laws today when all of a sudden there was a bang and the cutch pedal went to the floor! :bang:

We've been having difficulty getting it into gear for a while now, my father in law said he's had a look and it's just the cable that's snapped but I'm thinking it could be the clutch, has anyone had an issue like this before? Are the cables prone to snapping?

I haven't had the time to have a look yet, will do first thing in the morning, just wandering if it's a common fault or not

Thanks in advance

Dave

Thanks for the reply, yes I've found out that the slave cylinder had let go! So while the Suns out I'll get it sorted!

So I've changed the slave cylinder and I have bled the clutch, nice firm pedal. So I started the car up and I can't get any gears, you can hear the engine note change when I apply some pressure to the gear stick but no joy. Does anyone have any advice?! We need the car back on the road Asap!!! Thanks

Get someone to press the clutch pedal while you watch the rod coming out of the slave cylinder. It should move at least 1 1/4"; preferably closer to 1 1/2"

Did you bleed it by partially pulling the clip off the hose at the cylinder and easing the hose off, then leaving it to drain though for a few minutes?

No I didn't, I've been using an eezibleed system, I've managed to get 2nd-4th and reverse (that was still a bit crunchy going in but no 1st or 5th. So I bled it again...lost count how many times now...and it's gone back to having no gears :bang:

well definitely the issue then..,:)

how are you pressurising it..? at what pressure ..??

I used a sealed cap with a Schrader on it, then you can really PUSH the fluid down the line..,

Pressurising using a wheel off our aclass, states max 20psi so I started off a bit conservative at around 15 psi then went up to 20, starting to loose my mind a little now!
What is the correct way to bleed them (just to make sure I'm doing it right!) pedal to the floor, pressurise system then bleed the slave and finally master cylinder is they way I've been doing it....any hints on wether this is the right way?
Thanks!!!

Have a read through the thread I linked to above. If the car is parked on a hill, makes sure it's parked with the front pointing up the hill; some here even put the front of the car up on axle stands and claim that it helps. I wouldn't be to fussed about trying to use pressure on the system. It doesn't always seem to help with the clutch on these cars. Partially withdraw the pipe from the slave cylinder and just let it dribble through for 30 minutes or so, making sure that the reservoir is kept topped up. Put a small catch tray under (I use an old bit of foil tray, bent to fit) to catch the fluid and check it every few minutes for a) clean fluid and b) no bubbles.

If you do jack the front of the car up (and make absolutely certain the front wheels are well off the ground if you try the following) while the fluid is draining through you can try pushing the release arm on top of the gearbox to see how much travel there is in it (and also how good the arm bearings in the bellhousing are - see if the arm waggles around in them). You'll need to clamp something to the arm to give you a longer lever.. It's a bit fiddly, but can be done. If you succeed, try putting it into gear while you manually lever the clutch arm. If the gearlever still feels the same at it did when you were operating the clutch by foot, then the fault lies with the clutch itself, not the hydraulics.

Thanks, I'll have a go tomorrow. Given up for the day before I get any more miffed with it!

I had real issues with a Tempra years ago, needed @60 PSI to force fresh fluid into the slave cylinder,
last one I changed was on a marea JTD,( probably identical to yours) and it worked perfectly with little problem,

sounds like you are indeed struggling to get fluid through..,

maybe unbolt the unit from the g-box and raise it UP, with the bleed nipple at TOP,
then it should encourage all the air to escape better.

good luck tomorrow

Thanks for that! I'll be heading out in a mo to give it another shot....will update later and let you all know how I got on!

So I've done what was suggested, put the front up in the air and let it trickle out, and sits just the same as yesterday! No gears at all, a little frustrated is an understatement at the moment
