Hi,

When the wipers are in use there is a loud Clicking noise. Might be the relay?

Having done the research it seems it could be a fuse issue? A replacement could solve?

Anyone else have this?

Thanks

I have that too. It's a quiet ticking, a bit like a relay as you say. I don't find it that intrusive.

If the wipers are on intermittent, the body computer will click each time it energises the wiper.
If the rear wiper is on, that will also give a clicking. If front wipers are on intermittent, and the rear wiper is on, it wipes every second wipe of the front. The rear click is often a few milliseconds after the front.
If the wipers are on constant, a clicking could be worn linkage. Have a listen while outside the car. Linkage is below the black plastic panel below the windscreen.

Nope there shouldn't be a loud click.

There is a faint click from the relay in the body computer. Lower right hand side behind the fuses.

Front and rear wipers use a different but same size relay.

If its noticeably louder with the front wipers than the rear I would suspect its from the mechanism. I would lift the bonnet and with the wipers on have a listen.

Its normal... Mine (both) does it..my wife says its nothing, the faintest of clicks - Its frustrating me on an infuriating level: it's SO noisy...

Hi,
Yes it occurs in that way.

either electrical relay / BCM

or mechanical , worn wiper mechanism

POWER OFF,
lift the 2 x wipers - so they are FREE / away from the screen glass,
POWER ON

does the noise change ?,

the electrics will be unchanged.., but the mechanism will have sell load,
let us know what you find,

Charlie

Hi, HannsG. Your not going to believe this, but as the wiper blade gets to the top of it's stroke ,the wiper rubber returns on it's self with a loud click. The wiper rubber flicks back on it's self. It's amazingly loud. I found that when it rains heavily the noise diminishes. I must admit I do not know the answer. I have a feeling it could be the spring on the arm has weakened over time.I've tried different windscreen washers to no avail. I suspected that there was some wax or something similar on the screen but have cleaned the screen still no result. It's annoying but I just live with it. If you watch the wiper you will see it flick back and hear the click at the same time

Hi,

Never even thought of that.

Have you changed the rubbers?

the test I suggested should help pinpoint such noises..;)

Hi Charlie ,to hear the noise the blades need to be on the screen but if my answer is not the solution your reply will help. HannsG I'm too tight to change the wipers as they are still alright, although it could be the answer. Let us know what happens

There are 100HPs without Aerotwin wiper blades?

Seriously though, if it does turn out to be the wiper blade "clicking over" when changing direction, it could be that the wiper arm is slightly twisted.

I "adjusted" mine with 2 pairs of pliers and some old inner tube. Stopped the noise and improved the wiping effectiveness.

Then I changed to Aerotwin blades and they stopped lifting off the screen in side winds too... different story!

Wiper blades are supposed to flip over at the end of stroke. Those which don't, generally judder in one direction.

The noise could be wear in the linkage.

True, but if they are bent the changeover makes a lot of noise, rather than the normal gentle sound. It is even worse with old tired blades as they are much less flexible.

Linkages definitely a possibility though... the sound is different but definitely a clunk. It is more muffled and comes from lower down when heard from inside.

Also motor can cause strange noises when on it's way out, from screeching to ticking. Can also cause relay noises when earths or brushes are failing.

Bend the corner of a piece of paper. Now try to flatten it again. Impossible.
When the wipers park, the blades are always turned one way. Then they are left, sometimes for long periods before use again. Like the bent paper, they take on a 'set'. This impedes the flip when they move up the screen, which is what causes the judder and squeak. Bending the arm is an attempt to address the effect, not the cause.

To make them last longer, once or twice a week, when they are parked, push the blade downwards and release. With the rubber against the screen, this causes the edge to be flipped ready for the upstroke. It evens out the 'set', makes them last longer, and quieter. Works with original blades and aerotwin.

Original blades can also be given a new lease of life. Slide the rubber out and replace the other way around. Now the 'up' side becomes the 'down'. Can't do that with aeros.

I've got aeros on the Fiesta. Over several cars now, they've all often left unwiped bits around the centre of the blade, presumably due to low pressure. I tried some aeros on the Panda, replaced them after two weeks, as they did the same. The design of the aeros seem to even out the pressure and cause the centre to lift slightly. Just at the most important area.

On mine you can unclip the plastic arm adaptor...

Then use the whole blade upside down..

...unless the arm is bent. Usually from some muppet (in this case me) turning on the wipers while the blades were frozen to the screen.

I usually only change the blade frames when they actually need it. I always have some blade refills around, so usually just use those.

I changed over to Aero wipers for the wife's car (Sporting) because
(A) they look good
(B) I had a Bosch credit note, so they were effectively free.
They were an improvement, so I bought some generic Aero blades for mine.
They were c**p. Put the old school frames with new blades back on after first wet journey and got a refund.

Wasn't bother about changing them, but Bosch ones were on offer in January so I got some. They are pretty good, at least for my purposes.

Yet to see how well they last.
