I'm feeling really upset at this mornings news regarding Chris Hoy's cancer diagnosis. Especially following on from the tragic passing of Jenny Hastings. Our family has been very involved in the Scottish swimming scene with my older boy being a member of the Scottish team for a while and my daughter doing international competitive lifesaving. Just want to say what a wonderful example he is to us all and that we're thinking of him and his young family at this time

Also need to say, Lads, yes that's you! GET A PSA TEST. Quite a number of years ago my youngest brother died with cancer. They found two separate cancers in him, the pancreatic which killed him and a second primary - so not related to the pancreatic - in his prostate. My other brother, who passed on just before last Christmas, and I got to talking and he was able to tell me the examination following our father's death - from stroke - revealed early stage prostate cancer. I hadn't previously known that. I had a talk with my doc who told me all about the PSA test and got me to thinking about the full implications of having one done and how I'd feel if it turned out positive. Anyway, I decided to get one done and, with the family history, he agreed it was the thing to do. The result came back with a higher than hoped for number but not so high as to give immediate concern. He explained to me this test is not all that accurate but a lot better than doing nothing and we should do it again in a few months. The next one came back with similar numbers so he gave me a physical examination again (he'd done one of those first time round) and said he could feel a small hard bump on it so thought I should have a biopsy taken. This was done - not the most pleasant procedure and a wee bit sore too - and the result came back "early stage cell changes observed but no signs of cancerous growth" I may have got some of the terminology wrong. "watching wait recommended" So I now get a PSA done 2 or 3 times a year and the numbers are remaining static and stable and below the threshold where action is required. I also take a couple of tablets. My doc says these cancers tend to progress much more slowly in older men, and mine is not yet actually cancerous, so I'm almost guaranteed to die from something else before it catches me - cheerful bugger, but he knows I like it when he talks straight out about these things. I hate people who "***** foot" about!

Update following my other brother's death. He told me shortly before his death that he'd got it - pancreatic cancer - and, although knowing something was wrong, had done nothing because he was too busy. Finally it got to where he couldn't ignore it so he went in for Brachytherapy which it seems was successful but, unfortunately, the heart attack took him last Christmas. With this history my doc says my boys should be being tested and I've convinced my older boy (in his early 50s) to ask to be tested but my younger boy is still a work in hand as he just says he can't spare the time due to work.

So guys, Please please do give some serious thought to doing this. It might just save your life.

Hmm. Interesting that the forum lets me post bugger but not the word, starting with a P and related to cats?

Sadly i'm too naive to work out what the p word is!? Pratts?

I had a PSA test some years ago, can't remember why, but it came back fine, i also do my own bowel cancer test every year or two, its about time for another. I'd do more home tests but its generally made difficult.

yup, me too with the bowel cancer one. Have to initiate it myself now as I'm too old to get them automatically. Do you just not get it once you're old?

P word's got some s's and a y - got it now? such an innocent wee word. I hate how these words have been high jacked and corrupted. Gay, meaning happy and light hearted to me, as in "they had a gay time" is another. If you inadvertently use it people invariably misunderstand - so I just don't.

I get the P word now!

Having a 16 year old son means i get to hear some other corrupted words, did you know the word "sick" now means "great". So if i were to say my Grande Punto was sick, that'd mean it was great. Not a pain the in neck always needing repairs lol

Another one is the word "dope" also meaning "great". So if i were to say the speakers on my Grande Punto were dope, that'd mean they were great. Not the speakers having dope hidden behind them lol

I got a free bowel cancer test when i turned 50, and buy extras off Amazon every year or two.

My younger boy, having been a Scottish rapper when younger, is constantly coming up with this sort of stuff. I think "sick" has been around for some time but, dope? Like you, I thought it related to something called a "spliff"? Not that I'd know.

They stop sending us free bowel tests up here when you're 75 but you can be proactive and continue to request them on a one off basis.

If i recall correctly you may have your operation before long, i can imagine it'll be nerve wracking, but rest assured its a very safe procedure, and will definitely be worth it. Just think of all the extra car repairs and maintenance you can do next year ;)

Octopussy (÷8)

I am an age where Prostate testing is Advised, and lost my Dad to it 'prematurely',

But GP's now seem to advise PSA isn't accurate enough,

I got one in @2011, when I was 'early' for screening.

As you say.. The best thing you can do is present early, leaving it just isn't the correct option

Hi Anthony. Are you thinking about my hip operation? If so then I already had it. Glad to say all went well and I'm already shuffling about very happily on my walking sticks. I'll be running out of my normal pills by the end of this week and it's about a 15 minute walk up to the pharmacy - so 30 minutes there and back. Hoping I'll be up to doing that with a bit of luck, but I don't want to push "stupidly hard" so I'll just see how I get on with my daily walks through the week - managed to walk round the block today which took me 15 minutes for what would normally be maybe 5 minutes and was a bit sore when I got home. All looking very encouraging though and mending much faster than I'd expected.

Great news. I'm glad it went well and you're mending fast. I look forward to hearing about the extra car stuff you'll be doing before long lol

This thread has made me chuckle.

Very sad news for poor Chris Hoy I see today his wife is also suffering from aggressive Multiple Sclerosis

Also in the news is Jeremy Clarkson’s recent nearly close call with his heart, though I would say from a medical perspective what he describes was actually a heart attack

Non of us are getting any younger sadly but it helps to try and stay healthy less we end up like Alex Salmond

I think heart disease takes out a lot fewer people these days, mostly due to a reduction in smoking, but also UK people in general drink less alcohol. When I was young it was normal to drink heavily and smoke, times change for the better in this case.

I’d never thought about this but you may have a point. I’m probably a good 10 years younger than you but I’m probably of the last generation who would go out on a Friday/Saturday night and smoke a pack of cigarettes along side a few pints, this was before the smoking ban kicked in, so now isn’t going to happen, these days. Younger generations seem to be a lot more healthy in terms of smoking and drinking. But I wonder if inactivity will catch up with them? I also wonder what long term impacts e-cigarettes and vaping will have, as so many younger people do this now and we don’t fully know what affect this will have on people over the course of say 50 years.

Thank you ben, sorry if I'm not sticking to the rules. However I'm not sure what you've "cleaned up"? Also just want to say thank you for this excellent forum and thank you to all the great people on here who make it so.
An ex member was spouting a load of racist/argumentative drivel.

Nothing to do with you old chap 😁

As Ben said there was someone trying to turn this into a horrible racist argument, I tried to discuss this with him, but it was apparent that the whole thread was being spoilt and railroaded into some pretty awful comments on the part of this other person so I reported it asking if the whole thread could be cleaned up returning it to the well meaning thread it had been to start with. including deleting the posts I had made.
