Okay, I need the car's chassis number in order to get some repairs done. However, we can't find the chassis number, and I haven't got the handbook to hand.
Who knows where it is?

It will be on a plate under the bonnet and in the V5C registration document for the vehicle. I could also be stamped into the floor under a small plastic cover to the right of the driver's seat. It's also known as the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and for Fiats it will start with the letters ZFA.

Dave.

The chassis no. is actually on a plate on the left hand side of the boot, under the carpet.
I had to show the receptionist at the garage where it was, recently. She was so grateful for our few minutes in the darkness! He, he!

Thanks Chris, I thought it might be under the boot carpet, as we'd looked under the bonnet, and several other places. The VIN doesn't start with ZFA.
Now I'll have to take all the crap out of the boot!

If your VIN doesn't start with ZFA are you sure you actually have a Fiat ;) Think all recent Fiats use ZFA and older ones ZAR.

At the risk of stirring the argument, the original post wanted the chassis number to get spare parts. Davren said its also called the VIN number and that it started ZFA...

You are both correct in what you say. The full VIN does indeed start ZFA (the international code for Fiat), and will continue with 169000 -- the model code that identifies it as a Panda.

But the chassis number -- the bit that is unique to each bodyshell -- is only the second part of the whole VIN number. This is an eight-digit number, which will only be numbers (the first two of which are likely to be zero), as hmallet said. It is only this eight digit number that the parts dept need to be sure to supply the correct parts.

If you feel so inclined, see page 252 of the vehicle's instruction book, where Fiat themselves say that the plate is in the boot (wrongly, they say its on the right!) -- and explain that it shows the model number (ZFA 169000) and the chassis number.

VIN number should also be at the bottom near side of the windscreen - you might have to lift the wiper to see it.
