when removing the carpet, is it necessary to remove the back trim panels?

(The ones that go over the seat belt anchor points and run up the B pillars.)

Or can they be slipped out / in easily leaving these in place?

3 door?
take out sill covers
take out rear seat belt bars into sill
pull carpet out
if just pulling it forward so as to access the floor for welding its best to remove the rear seat bum squab too

sill trims off, handrake console off, passenger seat out, back seat out. I'll try taking it out like you suggest.

Well guessed that man, bit o' welding on the infamous back floor pan. I even have a small bit on the front for a special treat. That's what you get when you only start to take a real interest as your car approaches late middle age....

If anyone else is listening - and if you're only ever going to do one small bit of undersealing - do the back floor pans. Before the back floor pans do you.

That worked fine, thanks

Some tips for the future:

1. The front seat belt is tied to a bar in the back. To get the carpet off, this has to be removed. Remove the front bolt, then swivel the back out and out it pops.

2. You've got ~10% chance of saving the front button trims that hold the carpet flush to the front floor pans.

3. The centre console has to be popped off, or the carpet will rip. Two allen screws and pop it off.

4. Push the carpet forward over the boot release.

5. Unscrew the bonnet cable release handle, two nuts.

I would be better writing a guide......
