just cant beleave it my engine making a really bad knocking sound when i start it up and just keep on knocking like mad...like a TRACTOR.... any one no wot this is. iv been to the shop and thay said it mabe the wrong oil been put in or some think.....i dont no....

2000 year x reg

it a hgt 1.8i 16v.....

Check the amount of the engine oil. Mine had the same thing when the oil is decresed. I changed the oil and everything is good.

volkan...o.k did you just use engine fluse then drain all the old oil out then fit new oil filter and refill with new oil then let it run....

gonna do an oil change tomorrow so can some tell me if this is right...

(1) put engine fluse in with the old oil and let it run for about 10mins.
(2)then drain the old oil out of the car..making sure it all out.
(3)remove the old oil filter from the car and replace with a new one.
(4)then refill with new oil making sure the right lever been put back in.
(5)start car and let it tick over and let it run for about 10mins.

have i missed any think out here. or is my step ...(1).to.(5) all i need to do for a oil change...

i did not changed the oil myself but, first you drain the oil completely, change the oil filter, put new oil (correct type and amount), close all open caps :) then run the engine, sound from the engine disappeared in a few minutes. Hope this helps.

By the way did the car give an oil warning? Mine did not give the warning constantly but when I push the car to the limits when cornering it was giving oil warning for a shot time.

volkan..same here no warning light on or come.. im wondering if you no how to take the oil filter off with removing the engine cover cause it in the way...

also how long ago did yours start knocking since you have change the oil and have you had any noise come back since....

wot oil did you use and is your engine the hgt spec...

I am sorry that i cannot help you with the replacement of the oil filter :(

Mine is a 1.4 16v, the sound started the come 10.000 km's after the oil change.

I used Motul 10/40 oil, and the sound completely disappeared after the oil change.

As I drive in the car service we found out that the sound is because there is not enough oil in the engine :( luckily there was no damage to engine.

thanks any way volkan..but is ther any one how could tell me how the hell a remove the cover under the engine so i can get to the oil filter and remove it.. please can some one help me here as i need to sort this problem a.s.a.p........;)

If the clatter is like a diesel then its the variator. The engine has variable inlet cam timing worked by oil pressure. Old variators rattle horrbly.

More importantly when was your cam belt changed? If its done any more than 40,000 or you dont know then STOP USING THE CAR and get a new cam belt and variator.

When that belt fails you will have bent valves and mega bucks of costs. The head bolts are £50, Head gasket £50, vlaves about £20 each and you can bend 6 or eight of them.

A cam belt fitted is about £300 plus £100 for the variator and another hour for fitting. When its done it should purr like a sewing machine.

This shows the hassle I had

Its fab now :) but all because I got a dose of new toy syndrome. :(

While you are at it get a new water pump, full cam belt kit, and new accessory belt and idler.

whitesei..well iv put it into the garage this morning to get the engine fluse and new oil and filter done on the car. i have,nt been driving it since it strarted making alound knocking noise im hoping it not going to be the variator as thats will be more money. if the garage fluses my engine and put new oil and filter on the car and that dont sort it out and it is the variator will thay have to drain the new oil out to fix the variator or not as i dont wont them telling me i have to pay for an other oil and filter change. also how much are these variator cost and am i better leting the garage get it....cheers for the help....

jonnio.. think you got it abit wrong, it not new oil or filter yet untill he has done it. but wot im saying is when he has the change oil and filter and fluse the engine out and it still making knocking sound and turns out it is the variator will he have to change oil and filter again just that i dont wont him to try and charge me for a new oil change if you get wot i meen........also how much are variator for the hgt if it is it...........

some one no were the best place to have my car looked at in south london...........

The cam belt issue really is as important as I’m suggesting. If (when) it breaks the costs and hassle are LOADS. Good news you wont need to change the oil. Bad news, the variator will rattle regardless. The older ones had an internal design fault. New ones are sorted. When the cam belt is done the other stuff (variator, water pump, idler wheels, etc) is just good sense.

If you are not sure how old the cam belt is, the its safe to assume its not been done and should be done ASAP. They usually get replaced with the accessory belt so if the ribbed side is looking cracked you can bet the timing belt will soon be shedding teeth.

On my terminal journey (on the M6 & car going great), the engine did one or two hiccups but still ran fine. Then at a slip road traffic lights it stalled, wouldn’t start and the starter was going WOO-woo-Woo-woo (fast-slow).

I had 2 very bent exhaust valves and 4 slightly bent valves (replaced all eight at £17 each!). The belt had lost a load of teeth and the cams lagged until the valves eventually hit the pistons. The cam belt itself was still in one piece. The accessory belt was showing cracks across the driven (ribbed) side.

Most annoyingly, I had just bought the car but all the cam belt parts on order and was all geared-up to do the job 4 days later. It’ll be fine. :) Yeah right!!!

BTW I got my stuff from Shop4Parts both via the www and on the phone. They are helpful, knowledgeable and good value.

o.k... im able to get hold of an engine for £300 for my car it the same as mine hgt 1.8i 16v, the engine has..42k..on the clock and it coming out of an *51* plate hgt. and have it fitted for £250 and thats with new cam belt and water pump as well.. so all in all £550 thats for the engine and fitted with new cam belt and new water pump. is this a good price.......
