Why have you not bitten his hand off. The parts alone cost me (nearly) that much.

Do the belts (easy job off the car) and change the clutch even if it looks adequate as you'll be in there anyway. Your mechanic will need a set of HGT cam holding tools.

I have a set if you need them. £25 plus postage.

They are not the same as the 1200 and cost me £50 plus postage.

so it sound like im geting a good deal then i am £550.

he said it will take him about to two days to fit the engine thats with him fitting new cam belt and water pump, and once the engine in he going to give it a full service, engine fluse new oil, changing all the filters, plugs, every think that needs to be done will be done,

once the engine is in is ther any think i need to do like
taking it easy for abit befor i do go puting my foot down abit,

oh if ther is any think els that i can have replace on the
engine like gaskits or so please let me no cause i mite as
well have it all done at once so when i go to pick the car up it
will be 100%....

i was **** off this morning but ay im happy now
could off been alot more...:worship:

If the engine is used there is no need to run it in.

However, variators rattle badly when worn but they do not damage the engine. It's a well know issue with Fiats and Alfas that use the variator system.

So why does the mechanic think the variator has killed the old engine? What's actually wrong with the old engine?

whitesei..good to hear from you..

so thats good i dont need to do any running then
also i have no idea with the engine as i dont no much about car
as im a bike mechanic. but wot i do no is it was louder that a tractor
believe me...

also i would like to ask you when my new engine being fitted into
the car will he have to touch the clutch or gear box or is it just straight
forward bolt new engine in conect all the things thats need to be conected like throttle cable and stuff and all the rest wot need doing then thats it. and how long does this take to do as he told me it will take about
two or three days..

once again thank for all the info mate...(y)

beau...em i really do see wot you meen by replacing the clutch and the variator but my clutch is fine so no need for a new clutch at the moment. and the variator is a good idea but the engine only done 42k im sure the the variator wont need changing just yet will it...but i am having a good service on the engine when fitted..

well at least get him to inspect the clutch, at least he can tell you if its worn, half worn, or pretty new looking, even if its half worn id fit a new one, be crazy not to seeing as he will be taking it out.

shop4parts will sell a variator, with 42k miles on it, its deffo worth replacing.

i would still want to investigate why you need a new engine, it could be just be a new variator needed, they sound quite horrid when they go!

beau...i will be having him looking at the clutch and see wot it like..

also dont you worry mate the engine will be geting an other look over
as it will be coming back to my house and my mates dad will be checking it out to see wot the the problem really is...

but ay my engine that knocking it been arond the clock
so it clocked up some miles in it time..

do you no how much it is for a new clutch and fitted about...(y)

I've been very happy with Shop4Parts for my HGT bits.

Mine sounded a bit rattly whan I bought the car but I budgeted for the variator and cam belt in the price. But by the time is was properly hot the top end sounded horrendous.

I got unlucky and the cam belt failed 2 days later. But now its done the engine is like a sewing machine. Its done 66K and the cylinder bores and cam bearings were almost like new with machining marks still visible.

I have also replaced the clutch as the pedal action was heavy. So if I was putting in a 42K engine and box I'd still replace the clutch. The labour will be almost free if its done now.

To do the job disconnect the aircon (must be done by a pro), gear linkage cables, electrics, exhaust, cooling pipes and drive shafts. Its quite a bit to do.

I also replaced my thermostat as it was sticking probably due to the rubbish coolant that was in there.

My writeup covers the the cam belt and variator job - except you wont have to take the head off.

em, went to the garage and he aint starting my car untill tomorrow but i ask why the engine was total f**cked and he said the big ends had gone thats why it was knocking like mad, dose this happen with these car,

age of car,

year 2000,
reg x,
milage 130000,

iv put a video of my engine on youtube so you can see and hear it for your self and then let me no if it the variator or not, just type in ,,theboogie0189,, it to the search bar and you will see it,

please let me no wot you lot think...cheers thanks..(y)

well i just phone the garage to see how thay are geting on with fitting the engine and it all going well and said it sould be ready for tomorrow..:slayer:

but i mite sound stupid and stuff but is ther any main things that have to be done 100% propley to make sure the engine runs 100% once it fitted, like i meen double check pips wot may loss me power or wireing and stuff or any think. cause the engine that coming out now was f**king spot on and quick was,nt the word it use to give me a big smell:Dwhen i put my foot down and loved it. and now with this new engine going in i cant help sit here thinking is it still going to be as quick..YES.. i no it the hgt 1.8i 16v still going in but u no how it is.

oh one more thing when i poped down the garage he also said
that he got to remove the sub frame or some think to remove and replace new engine,

He probably dropped the subframe down complete with engine box and drive shafts. I planned to do this but chickened out due to lack of equipment. The HGT engine is really shoehorned in so taking it down is probably the only way to go.

You could ask hime to spray around with waxoyl before putting it all back.

The only things to check are the stuff discussed. Replace the timing belt, variator and water pump and maybe the accessory belt. The pump only because access is so poor. Also check the clutch and change parts if necessary. Mine needed a new thermostat, but I think that was due to crap coolant used by the previous bloke.

If you want real zip it may need a new exhaust manifold. The later HGTs have a short manifold with two front cats that strangle it. The snag is £450 for an aftermarket manifold. Bike exhausts are pricey but you can get full systems for less than that!

Brakes? Mine are fine.

Suspension? Mine with 66K is ok the car sticks like wotsits and its not too jiggly on rough surfaces. Im sure new shocks would benefit but the existing will do for a while.

whitesei..o.k so going the sub frame way sound best way to do it then.

only ask this because i dont no **** all about car engine when it come to removing them. also doing it this way will it knock all my tracking and wheel balancing out so it dont drive in a straight line and would have to have tracking and stuff like that again..(y)

could be crank shaft tht was knocking...engine is t total if it was tht anyway, is due to lack of oil... great deal with new engine thou!!

whitesei...cheers for leting me no about the tracking mate.

also im only having the engine fitted in now and not going to get it service
by him, im booking it in with fiat to have the full works done on it.. gold service for £159..

think im better doing it this ways with the full service with fiat as then i no that every thinks been looked over 100% witch will make me feel better then i no the engine been fiitted right if you no wot i meen.

i will be telling fiat i just had an other engine fitted and could thay check it over to see it all o.k...

i cant go wrong with fiat right..
