Hi my stilos coming to 53k and is on 02 reg so im thinking its time for a cambelt change, just wondering how much people have been charged for this?
its a 1.6.
Many Thanks Alex

re: 1.6 cambelt change - price?

probably cos stilo owners are too scared to take it to a garage...

either that or they are in so often for everything breaking it doesnt need servicing

re: 1.6 cambelt change - price?

Belt and tensioners are around £50 so it's just the time to fit so price should be £150-200 mark but then you'd be wise to change aux drive belts (air con + alternator) as they have to come off anyway

I could never understand why- if you went to a garage for a quote of a cambelt change they say
"time blah- parts blah- total bit e bap"
can you change the alternator belt while you're there?
Similar answer
"time blah- parts blah- total bit e bop"

Then they'd ADD them both together! You can't do the first job without taking the alternator belt off and replacing it

Do garages still do that?

Yes they do Decks (n) I had a head gasket done on my GTI cos I had a small oil leak and it was making a mess on the engine AND the drive the cam belt wasn't due for another 10,000 mls but I thought well their taking the head off soooo etc etc Oh but that's another job came the answer Arrr but its gotta come off [cambelt] anyway in the end they charged me for the cam belt and £25 for fitting it but the cam belt change on its own was £109 so I let it go and payed it but just think if it had been a customer who didn't know this [RIP OFF] big time and I bet it happens a lot

re: 1.6 cambelt change - price?

Are you being cautious, as interval for cam belt change is 72,000 miles or 5 years? Or do you have reason to think it needs changing sooner?

Stilo 1.6 cambelt

Hi this is my first request for information but I have read posts on replacing rear brake pads; thanks it would have been impossible without reading that.
My Stilo is now coming up to 70000 miles so will need a cambelt change at the next service( maybe a months time) ,last time I asked at the dealers they said it would be £500-£600 (I can`t remember exactly as I felt faint and cracked my head on the counter!) but they would give me a discount as I`d been a good customer i.e as well as servicing they get to do all the warranty work)

I need to have the cambelt done as I have an extended warranty to 100000 miles or next June. What price should I pay at a FIAT dealer or independent VAT registered garage?

Thanks, Nigel

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

can ya not buy a fiat timing belt kit ( includes idlers and tensioner ) and get it fitted by a non fiat garage , save you a fortune . just check with fiat ya never know

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

I am miles away yet from the cambelt change but as they were on offer the other day I bought them as a kit from shop4 parts and I would have thought that an indipendant would be a lot cheaper that fiat for the job :)

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

had my car serviced last month so checked out prices...

cambelt only £595 inc vat
cambelt plus service £695 inc vat

very scary prices:eek:

all at glyn hopkins at east ham (main dealer)

if you have the technical knowhow you would save a fortune

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

I checked out independent garage price here recently for Stilo 1.6 for new
cambelt
tensioner
new belts incl air con
new water pump
quote £380

I'll still probably do it myself though

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

Any Techies about that can advise on timing marks for various Models would be appreciated.
Previous cars I have owned I have always changed the belts myself ( Haynes Manual always available ) Last one I did was Ford Mondeo belt cost £17 !

But Haynes dont do Manual for Stilo although I believe There is a book available which covers most engines. Is Stilo jtd same Engine as Vauxhall ?

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

Found the quote now
cambelt kit £79.90
Water pump £76
Aux drive belts £20
A/Freeze £15
Labour £152.75

Total £343

Fiat aren't keen on timing marks, preferring tools to align/synch the camshaft/ crankshaft so you quite simply make your own marks before you take the belts off. It's not difficult

A lot of garages expect there to be timing marks and merrily remove the belt only to find they've now lost the timing. Many Bravos have come back from garages with the timing one notch out so it runs like a dog. Look on the Bravo forum and you'll find loads of people wondering why their car runs rough after they've had a cambelt change

If the belt has snapped though then you're truly stuffed (besides having to remove the head and replace valves etc) and will need to get hold of the special camshaft to crankshaft alignment tools. They cost around £150 and lock the camshaft in a set position

As always, gaining access is the major part of the task and. of course, always change the tensioner as well and not just the belt

Water pumps seem to start breaking up around 70k miles so if you do the maths then you can find yourself having to take all this same stuff off again to replace the pump. It's up to you whether to replace the water pump at the same time. Garages hardly charge for the very little extra labour as they already have the access to change it.

Now thats what I call good old vulcan logic iE the water pump change there seem to be people out there that cant see the logic of this until the inevertable happens and they are faced with another bill for basicaly the same job and the inconvienience of the car being of the road when it didnt have to (y)

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

Does the auxilliary belt (altenator, air con) have to be removed to change the cambelt?

Having my cambelt done with FIAT soon, needs a new aux belt too; if thats the case, I'll bung them a belt to throw on :D

Re: Stilo 1.6 cambelt

Thanks for all the replies to my request for cam belt prices.
Now only 1500 miles from needing to change it, maybe I`ll just sell the car before the change is due! Does anyone want a 02 Stilo Actve air con, full service history, warranty to 100000 miles, 71500 miles done , run on synthetic or semi-synthetic oil , new exhaust, tyres, 10 months MOT., new air con etc.

I am going to change it for a diesel ,
Thanks ,Nigel
