I would definitely log it. The more people who complain the more likelihood they will fix it.

Yep, I agree. It helps if they can't say, "nobody else has had this problem", and if people don't log it, they can say that...

Thanks for your advice. I'll do that and let you know the outcome.

There's a link to this forum on fiat's own forum site but maybe we should all go on it and log the problem we're all having on there too.

my car currently with fiat for an extended stay to try to resolve this stop start issue-

after cold starting it and maneuvering this morning, the usual 'trigger' points, they have uncovered a fault code- basically the gear position sensor not functioning properly...they think this is the cause-

im pretty sure some one else has had this replaced- without reading every page of this EXCEPTIONALLY long thread.....is that the case?...because i also think i remember that not working!

Sounds promising. Let's hope it's just a faulty batch of detectors or something

I think that was us! We've had something done under the gear lever, as they had to take the gear lever out and replace something, and I'm pretty sure it was a sensor of some kind, so probably the same thing.

They did this the day after we took delivery, or at least that's when we took the car in, and they later phoned to say they've ordered the part, and it eventually turned up a week later, with our car gathering dust in their workshop.

The car was fine when we picked it up after the so called fix, but then the next day it just did the same thing again and again and again, and it still remains the same.

Current state of play with us is that the garage say they don't know the answer, and are waiting for Fiat Italy to come up with the answer, and they'll call us when they know something. Still waiting...

Keeforelli, have you had anything else changed in an attempt to resolve this issue? It could be that there are several things in the car that is triggering it off, hence nobody knowing the single cause, because there could be several!

Just been told that Fiat have a fix and the car is to go in Wednesday for a new part. Fingers crossed.

hi jim

i had a 'reset' done when they basically cleared the fault codes and did a software update- this then had to go back in again as didnt work, they then did it AGAIN, they also replaced a switch/ sensor in the accelerator pedal as this was creaking- this was unrelated at the time but i was told on wednesday that this too may have had an impact, and now they are replacing the gear lever position sensor.

not picked it up yet so we will see, the part was due to arrive today.
The previous post sounds promising, tho i do get the impression they are simply trying different things, and that there is no set fix- the service manager told me as much.

This will be the fourth attempt!

it has been far less troublesome recently since the last attempt, coupled with the advice to depress and release the clutch on start up before engaging gear, that i read here...that seems to have made a difference in itself.

I picked my start/stop up on Wednesday. I haven't had a problem with it so far. I started to read back over this thread to see if people had a period of it working fine before it started to go wrong, but only made it a bit of the way through - this thread is massive. Anyway, The ones I did re-read seem to have had problems from day one, so it's promising that I haven't had any yet - perhaps I have the same ECU that jeb1 has now had fitted. If so, it's promising stuff. I'll update in a week or two to report on whether it's been behaving, and I'll vote on the poll (I'm a bit superstitious about doing it yet).

i think my 500 has been fixed!!!!!!!!...tho the last time i said that on here....i tempted fate a little too much!

new gear lever position sensor (and entirely new, completely different gear lever and leather housing with metal inserts that i love!)...seems to have done the trick!

How long have you had it working?

Did they also put in a new ECU, or was it just the gear lever and sensor?

Did you ask them to change the gear lever, or did they do that as part of the fix?

Heck! Nipped to shop today and noticed the warning light and the start/stop inactive light, and a message saying start/stop unavailable. This was after manoeuvring out of a pretty tight parking space on my street. This is the first time it's happened, but then I've only had the car for four days. I stopped and restarted and it was fine. I had a feeling that if I posted on here saying 'so far, so good' I would start having problems - sod's law!

Bugger..... at least you have the luxury of not being the first person with the problem. Hopefully others will have the problem sorted soon.

jim

it came up on the diagnostic after the 3 day stay in the dealership-

nothing mentioned about the ECU- the first i heard of this fix was yesterday on here!

had it back since last tuesday- just manouvered normally and used the s/s as intended, its been fine- car seems more driveable now too- i presume this sensor also affects ease of gear changes/revs as changing gear etc...its just a much much nicer gear change....and much nicer gear shifter tactility too.

pleased person.:)

And what about the new gear lever? Did you get that because they said it was part of the fix?

I ask because we've had the gear lever sensor replaced, but not the gear lever...
