Technical C2003-13 Fault Code

So much sadness, new battery hasn't solved my issue, still have the yellow triangle on the dash, 4x4 Unavailable message and ELD (probably got that wrong, the 4x4 button) does nothing
Got a new brake light switch to fit, will try and do that tonight, fingers crossed I make some progress. On the brake light switch connector, I'm guessing part of it slides up then I can disconnect?

OK; I circled back and reread the thread. Maybe the collective experience of a failing battery distracted us from the original post that says you had an ABS sensor changed? The 4WD system is really smart and uses the ABS system to "emulate" (if that is the right word) diff locking as required. Perhaps there remains an issue with the ABS maybe it was the pickup ring and not the sensor? Or there is an issue on a different wheel? Also there is a solenoid on the rear diff that forces engagement - can you check that connection?

Anything beyond a failing or low battery volts is outside my own 4x4 experience so the above is pure speculation. I think I would want to check the ABS is functional too perhaps by trying an emergency stop on a loose or slippery surface (safely of course).

I have swapped a brake light switch before which is a good call too given it informs the ECU when the brakes are not on as well as when the pedal is depressed. This can affect "stuff" if that signal is missing (I assume its working ok when pressed as the brake lights come on?!).

Finally the ABS informs wheel speed and the rudimental tyre pressure monitor (a smaller diameter wheel goes round faster) tyre pressures are ok and wheel sizes match..? (sorry if this offends but sometimes it can be the less obvious) - this I think can cancel the 4WD functionality...

I'll need to get Multiecuscan and take it from there. I know there's a solenoid on the rear diff which I can test with MES

Weird one though, with the ignition on, car not running, I can press the ELD button, it lights up green, dash tells me it's on then when I start the car I get 4x4 Unavailable message but the ELD button is still green

Don't know enough about Fiats to draw any conclusions so I'll get it scanned properly and hopefully get to the bottom of it

I think the light in the ELD button simply comes on to show the button is pressed.

With, or without that pressed, the car can still choose (by itself) to engage 4 wheel drive. But no lights show this is happening.

With (but not without) the button pressed, no lights should show on the dash either (after initially showing for a second or two at start up). But, with the button pressed (which ‘forces’ 4x4, or, if you prefer, overrides the auto 4x4 selection), the car can also choose to automatically, if the ABS sensors detect that one wheel is spinning faster than the other at the same end of the car, apply the brake to that spinning wheel. That braking action is the ELD in action. When that happens (which will only be for a second or two until the other wheel regains traction), the word ELD will flash (I think in green) inside the speedometer but only for that second or two it’s ’doing it’s stuff’ — it doesn’t stay on.

4x4 unavailable doesn’t mean the ELD system has failed. It means the solenoid that ‘engages the rear clutch’ to drive the rear wheels isn’t working. The solenoid (on the left side of the rear differential, close to the front of the casing), can probably be tested for continuity with a multimeter.

Finally got my camper van fixed and back on to the Panda. Got my cables through from Gendan and registered my version of MES

I'm getting this via MES: -

Gearbox / CCM (Coupling Control Module)
4x4 coupling control
ISO Code: AB 80 01 0B 8C
Hardware number: M0012945 - Ver: 45
Software number: 10011907 - Ver: 1001
Errors found:
C2003-13 - Solenoid valve current check - Open circuit
C2005-68 - Electronic lock differential (ELD) - Event information

Can anyone advise where to go from here? Do I bite the bullet and replace the 4x4 solenoid (part no. 71773811 I think) or is there a fuse/relay I should look at first?

In the fuse box under the bonnet (next to the battery), fuse 23 is labelled 'Differential control unit' -- which I assume is the 4x4 engagement?

Also, you should be able to check for a voltage at teh plug thats connected to the solenoid.

The 'ELD event' I think is only noting that teh ELD has tried to operate at some point, rather than suggesting a fault - but I may be wrong

Also, the fuse box inside the car (accessed via the little door at the back of teh glovebox) has a fuse which has 'gearbox solenoid' included in the list of what it protects -- but the list also includes several other things, which I suspect you'd have noticed if they weren't working (I guess 'roof lights' is the interior light, for example) , and so can assume this fuse is ok.
