Well, I'm not the first and certainly not the last to have this problem I'm sure :bang:

Turned my Punto ELX on to drive home and the steering warning light was on, went to drive and it was like a dead weight... Power steering has failed.

With it being my first car (nightmare at that!) I'm considering my options.

1. Attempt to repair it?
2. Leave it?? It this wise though?
3. Get rid of the car and get a new one?

Can someone please help. Is it worth the hassle of replairing it. The cars W reg, ELX, with 86,000... I have been wanting a new one, but now I'm losing value with this failing and I'm genuinely disapointed with FIAT.

have you done anything to the battery?

I find my steering goes sometimes after I disconnect the battery. After a wwhile, the fault disappears the the power steering goes back to normal

mine has 120000miles and i never had a power steering failure but this kind of problems are usual in all cars with electric assisted steering (like opel ). The repairing costs are high (here in portugal about 700eur) and you must decide if you like the car and want to keep it (if its in general good conditions) or if you prefer to buy another but don't forget that a caf is always an extra with lots of costs. And believe when i say that if there are reliable cars, punto 8v is one for sure!

Yeah most of the time, it works again when you turn the ignition back on...however this is a sign its likely to go permanently soon :( Mine wasn't kind enough to tell me, mine just died and has never come back :(

Same as yours tbh, W-reg 80k, T14086 is right, its an old car and there are cheap hatchbacks at the end of the day.
There is that many things wrong with mine, I've just left my power steering, I've gotten used to lack of power :) Its ok after a while lol.

Has anyone got a good circuit diagram of the punto
power steering wiring please

And a description / instructions of the wiring modification
fiat has fitted to some puntos between the speed sensor
and the fuse box.

Need to sort a punto out with steering failure.

they used to last longer when the steering was hidraulic but in the recent years the manufacters prefer the electric steering because it is cheaper to install and it saves fuel because it doesn't depend on the engine power...to drive without the electric assistance is suicide because it isn't just heavy but it can fail and block completely...

this happened with my y reg 1.2 8v, check the fuses to make sure (both under the bonnet and steering collumn) if this isnt it it will be the motor itself, i have no idea how to recondition a motor but you can get a second hand one for about £130 and have it fitted for about the same.

it all depends on the motor cos mine went at 47k and the one i bought had 45k on it and its fine

might be slightly more expensive, but if they are worrying about fuel and dependancy on engine power.. why not use an EHPAS system (Electric Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering)

this system is basically the same as a normal power steering system used on older cars, except instead of a pump attached to the engine, its an electric pump.. which can vary the assistance based on car speed and steering setting.

This is the system now used on the ford focus and i think some other companies use this system too.

Much more reliable as its a hydraulic system, more flexible because the assistance can be altered by changing the pumping speed.. whilst being more fuel efficient because it doesnt rely on the engine to power it.. so overall you get the best of both worlds:).. and if the pump fails its just a pump.. no complicated torque sensors or integrated ECU requiring a complete column change.

A modern cars steering should last longer. I know cars 20 years old with power steering and it hasnt failed.

and.........

Disagree, come across loads of problems with electro/hydraullic systems & mots of all it has fluid in it which from a enviromental aspect is exactly why electric systems are becoming more & more widespread.

Its a common fault, the steering went on both my MK3 panda after 21,000 miles and on my MK2 punto at 76,000 miles on the day I bought it . The garage I bought it from replaced it for me only because I stamped my feet and shouted at him when he tried to fob me off.

If I remember rightly you can get all the parts to change the whole lot for about £300/£400 but it werent from Fiat.

Its not dangerous, it can be fixed. If you get rid of it you will obviously not get a lot for it. :(
