Hard to say, its not like your sending loads of power down them over a long distance.

How quickly does it cut out when you play it?

Could you play just the sub and see if it cuts out or start to smell, then if it doesn't, try the same with just the 6x9s?

That why you can rule out which area is at fault.

If its still not right by the time the bash comes around, I'll have a gander if you want (y)

Burning smell and cut outs insn't interference. If your power cable is overused, the inline fuse should have gone, then you wouldn't be able to power back up. Sounds to me like the amp is doing its job, but something isn't able to cope with the power its kickin out. The burning smell is presumably the shielding on a cable meting due to too much current passing through. I would guess this is in the speaker cable, especially if these have been replaced with narrow guage grey ones. The speaker cable is probably more likely to be the problem if you've been through a couple sets of 6x9s to no avail.
In my useless opinion Id say, get your mate to replace cabling, burning smell is normally the result if underrrated cable, new wiring isn't that expensive and its very important that you have a wiring set which can handle the power you put through it. Secondly, talk to the last people who faffed with it before it cut out. At the end of the day, if your system used to kick, and since they touched it its had problems, its really their job to sort it out. Even if its awkward, I'm sure a coy look and a smile could convince them to have a look at it.
Hope thats of some help, if not, hey, at least I dont charge for my babble eh?

I would change them naff grey wires like suggested. But echoeing others, it does sound like somethings gone pop! As you increase the volume to your voice coils, the voltage is upped and the wires spark between them more causing the amp More trouble, therefore you can sometimes end up with distortion whilst your install gets louder.

I know. Molten solder is too - especially when a blob of it falls on the back of your hand! :D
