Burning?

hi, i have punto ELX 'W' reg i have put a 15'' 1500W sony Xplod subwoofer in the boot and a 1200W kenwood amp running it, when i turn it up i can smell a burning smell from the subwoofer....... maybe its the subwoofer coil burning? how could it burn? im only running 1200W not 1500W+, any ideas what could be the problem.

Clipping (distorting) the amp which is frying coil?

If you've got your gains high with bass boost, etc fired up then that's a likely culprit.

All coils can get a little bit smelly when being hammered. It's not a good thing though so as Paul said turn the boost and gain down so it doesn't do it.
