General Broken door handle

Hi everyone
Happy New Year!

I have a 2010 Fiat 500 lounge
The drivers side handle broke, a common problem as I have been told
I bought a new handle from eBay. Took the door panel off, removed the old handle and even managed to swop the door lock over.
I put the new handle back on but the connecting rod keeps falling out of its hole.
It’s the rod that fits into the red plastic insert
This insert does not have a retaining clip like the other inserts. Just wondering if it should?
This is actually the bit that broke so I don’t have anything to compare with
Photo 1 shows the rod replaced
Photo 2 shows it fallen out after 3-4 times opening the door
Photo 3 is the original part stripped out
Photo 4 shows the lower section of this rod where the red insert has a retaining clip

Hello and welcome to the forum.

These clips are fragile and easily lost or broken, especially on older cars when the plastic has aged.

@typecastboy is our resident expert on which clips are supposed to go where, and sometimes has spares available. He'll likely be along soon.

Door hinge replacement broke white plastic clip!! Help | FIAT 500 (2007+)

Hi. I was replacing the door hinge. Easy enough, but broke the little white plastic locating clip in the back of the handle mechanism when pushing the link back in (that's the link with the red clip at the other end). Does anyone know where I can get one?

Link above from Varescrazy. They are not meant to have a tab at the top. It's only the bottom ones that have the little tab that holds it in place. That red clip you have at the top is actually the wrong one, that may be why it's falling out. Those are white and have little teeth that hold the rod in. It looks like someones been in there before you and used an old red one.

Have to be real careful when buying e-bay parts. best to either have the broken old bit in your hand or do some research prior to purchasing! saves as lot of time and aggro in the long run! especially if purchasing from a large country quite close to Japan! if possible always try to find what you need from one of the Fiat(500) specialists that advertise online!.
As its in there interests to supply good quality stuff that works! rather than cheep copys made out of metal thats weaker than play-doh!.
And reduces the chances of you having to sod around returning stuff and trying to get a refund!.
