Hello,
I have an Xreg Brava 1.6 elx and the engine is misfiring after getting water up into the engine bay a few weeks back.
Engine light came on at the time, but didnt start misfiring till later.
Revs can surge up and down; also a bit of a meths like smell comes through.

I'd hoped that matters would rectify after it had dried out in my garage but no such luck.

Took it to Kwik fit in Chelmsford for diagnosis as it was the closest garage and got error codes P0202/P0204/P0230/P0300.

According to them 202 is injection valve cylinder 2
204 ditto for cylinder 4.
300 random/multiple cylinders misfire detected.
230 electric fuel pump primary circuit.

I'm hoping its likely that i've shorted out the coil pack and thats failing so if i replace that (and plugs & leads) i should be ok.

Worst case is that i've actually had some water droplets go in the air intake all the way through to the cylinders and i've stuffed the engine.
(but why only 2 cylinders in that case?)

Not sure about the p0230 elecric fuel pump primary circuit, so am off to the library shortly to get the Haynes manual for the Brava so i know more of what i'm looking at.

Any input gratefully received.

Dave

Hi Dave,

I would think it unlikely your sucked enough water into the block to do any mechanical damage,

probably water in the electrics though..

possibly a couple of dodgy leads / coils giving your misfire.., and racking up the error codes,

if you can give us more details of the "WET incident" we may have a better informed idea of the options,

maybe worth posting in the Marea section too as it was a common motor in the Marea,

Charlie

Hi and thanks for your reply.

Firstly we can discount the meths smell.
After doing some checking i found i'd overfilled the coolant when topping it up. Car had been in my garage all week and in sub zero temperatures so level was a lot lower than normal. Have to remember in future to check when it has been running and was hot. Doh! :(
Anyhoo, plastic turkey baster to the rescue to slup out the excess and coolant level sorted.

Basically the problem arose going through country lanes a few weeks back(on route to my mum's) where there was 1-2ft of water on the roads in a number of places, runoff from fields, and no alternative route.

Went through in 2nd keeping revs up and aiming for the lowest levels and on one of these the light came on.
Had been through a number by of these floods by then and also had a few bow waves from oncoming vehicles go over the bonnet & windscreen.

There was no immediate issue apart from the amber engine managment light coming on; drove as per normal.

A few days later with the engine management light still on but no driving issues as i expected it just need to dry out, I treated myself to a hand car wash where they jet wash first (car was filthy from the previous runs through floods and general winter road grime)
Started misfiring shortly thereafter.

Popped over mums again this afternoon and have the following observations from a 30 mins 12 mile drive.

Misfires from start up and revs are jerky when accelerating.
Engine management light flashes when accelerating hard.
Cruising at 50 there's no misfiring or revs going up or down as presumably sparks and injectors are getting electrikery at a decent level, but its awkward getting there!

I think if i'd screwed the cylinders with water getting all the way through to them via the air intake, i wouldn't be able to cruise at all, it'd be jerky all the way and probably the temperature gauge would hit the roof when its just stays centered when the cars warmed up.

I've got the Haynes manual now; some light reading before Borgen :)

Apols for delay in updating, but that pesky thing called working away from home tends to put the kibosh on actualy doing much.
Home again (for a bit) so has some time to get things sorted and a new coil pack has resolved the problems.:)

Thanks for your help folks.
