what is your definition?

I class a bolt as having a shank. while a screw starts from the head. is my description. and what i have been taught.

I want to hear your descriptions

I will request a poll in a few days. when we have the various opinions

we need a i appreciate your comment button.
you could add more information to your agreement. by saying a bolt screws into a pre made thread. covering tapped holes.
bed time

I agree with what's been posted, a screw goes into a tapped hole or non tapped hole. Anything that has a nut on the end, is a bolt.

However, the exception is when a bolt holds something on, for example wheel bolts, they just go into a hole and are therefore screw-like, but the existence of the wheel before the medium that the bolt goes into makes it a bolt.

If that makes any sense at all

My point exactly.

The tool used does not define the name of the fixing.
shh jipo
so what does define it cause the wood screw, screws my theory.
unless its a combination of both. so tapered end and starts from begining
if has a shank and tapered end.

when what do we do about pressure fixing whare the thread tapers

got the american one from that document

2.1 Bolt
A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed for insertion through the holes in assembled parts, and is normally intended to be tightened or released by torquing a nut.
2.2 Screw
A screw is an externally threaded fastener capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, of mating with a preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and of being tightened or released by torquing the head.

so americans claim a bolt is not driven.

Generally speaking, bludvl_x19 has it correct as far as I'm aware, but I'm sure there will be exceptions.

A bolt screws into a nut.

A screw doesn't, uses the medium that you are affixing to eg a self tapper into wood.
